A Michigan family is sharing their painful experience after their two-year-old daughter was seriously injured by the family’s dog, hoping their story will encourage other pet owners to recognize warning signs of aggression before tragedy strikes.

While the emotional event forever changed their lives, the parents say they hope others can learn from what happened.

A Dog That Was Once Part of the Family

Heather and Nicholas Harris welcomed their Weimaraner, Remington, into their home in 2021 when he was just eight weeks old.

According to Heather, Remington quickly formed a particularly strong bond with her husband, Nicholas, who had always dreamed of owning the breed.

Although the family loved Remington, Heather later recalled that the dog appeared far more attached to Nicholas than to her.

She also said there had been previous behavioral concerns. After Remington was involved in a couple of aggressive incidents with the family’s other dog, the couple sought professional veterinary care. The dog was evaluated, placed on medication, and, according to Heather, no further aggressive incidents occurred for several months, though concerns about resource guarding remained.

A Normal Day Turned Into a Nightmare

In October 2024, Heather was home caring for the couple’s 11-month-old daughter, Savannah.

The toddler was moving around the kitchen in a baby walker while Heather stayed nearby.

Moments later, Heather heard a growl followed immediately by her daughter’s cry.

She rushed into the room and found that Remington had bitten Savannah’s face.

The injury was severe.

Heather later described the scene as one of the most traumatic moments of her life, saying there was significant bleeding and that she immediately called for emergency medical help.

Emergency Surgery

Savannah was rushed to a children’s hospital, where doctors performed emergency reconstructive treatment.

Medical teams used a bioengineered skin substitute to help promote healing and restore damaged tissue.

Since the attack, Savannah has undergone additional procedures to reduce scar tissue, and her family says another surgery is planned as part of her ongoing recovery.

Although doctors have been able to repair much of the damage, Heather says her daughter will likely always have a facial scar.

The family is grateful the injuries were not even more severe.

A Mother’s Personal Belief’

Following the incident, Heather shared her own interpretation of the dog’s behavior, saying she believed Remington had developed an unusually strong attachment to her husband and had shown negative behavior toward her over time.

She personally believes that dynamic may have played a role in the attack.

However, the exact reason why dogs bite can be complex and is often impossible to determine with certainty. Animal behavior experts note that aggression may result from multiple factors, including fear, anxiety, stress, resource guarding, pain, medical conditions, or environmental triggers.

A Difficult Decision

After the attack, the family made the heartbreaking decision to have Remington euthanized.

For Heather and Nicholas, it was an emotional end to a relationship with a dog they had raised from puppyhood.

At the same time, their priority became helping Savannah recover physically and emotionally from the traumatic experience.

Today, the little girl continues to heal with the support of her family and medical team.

Heather hopes that sharing her family’s story will encourage other parents to act early if a dog begins showing signs of aggression.

Her message is simple: if a pet repeatedly displays aggressive behavior around people or other animals, owners should seek professional help immediately and carefully evaluate whether the home environment remains safe—especially when infants or young children are involved.

Experts generally recommend that interactions between young children and dogs should always be closely supervised, regardless of a dog’s breed or previous behavior. Even well-loved family pets can react unpredictably under certain circumstances.
