Italian Police Use Tear Gas and Water Cannons on Protesters Near Olympic Village

Italian police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse protesters near the Olympic Village in Milan after clashes broke out during a demonstration against the 2026 Milano-Cortina Winter Olympics, authorities said.
Thousands of people had gathered for a protest that was initially peaceful, voicing concerns over the environmental, social and economic impact of hosting the Winter Games. Tensions escalated when a smaller group broke away from the main march and attempted to push toward restricted areas near Olympic facilities.
Police said some protesters threw objects and fireworks at officers, prompting security forces to intervene using crowd-control measures. Officers in riot gear deployed tear gas and water cannons to push demonstrators back and restore order.

Several people were detained, and there were no immediate reports of serious injuries. Authorities said the situation was later brought under control and that Olympic infrastructure and athletes were not affected.
