THE ROAR REMAINS: Lamborghini Scraps All-Electric Plans as CEO Warns of “Expensive Hobby”

SANT’AGATA BOLOGNESE, ITALY — In a move that has sent ripples through the automotive industry, Lamborghini has officially pulled the plug on its first fully electric vehicle. The decision, confirmed by CEO Stephan Winkelmann in a candid interview with The Sunday Times, marks a sharp departure from the brand’s earlier commitment to a battery-powered future.
The Death of the Electric Lanzador
The project at the center of this cancellation is the Lanzador, a high-riding 2+2 “Ultra GT” concept first unveiled in 2023. Originally slated for a 2028 debut, the Lanzador was intended to be the vanguard of Lamborghini’s electric era. However, internal data suggests that the “acceptance curve” for electric supercars among the brand’s wealthy clientele has plummeted to “close to zero.”
“Investing heavily in full-EV development when the market and customer base are not ready would be an expensive hobby,” Winkelmann stated. He emphasized that such a move would be “financially irresponsible” toward shareholders and employees alike.
The “Emotional” Deficit
The primary hurdle for an electric Lamborghini isn’t performance—EVs are famously fast—but rather the sensory experience.
The Sound of the Bull: Lamborghini buyers often pay six or seven figures for the visceral roar of a V12 or V8 engine.
The “Mechanical Soul”: Winkelmann noted that current EV technology struggles to deliver the specific “emotional connection” that defines the brand.
A Hybrid Future
Instead of abandoning the Lanzador entirely, Lamborghini will re-engineer the model (and its future successor to the Urus) as a Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV). This allows the company to meet tightening emissions regulations while keeping the combustion engine “for as long as possible.”
The brand’s current hybridized lineup—the Revuelto, Temerario, and Urus SE—has seen record-breaking sales, proving that for now, Lamborghini owners want a spark of electricity to boost performance, but they still want the fire of an engine to provide the soul.
