Thundercats Live Action

Rating: 4/5 Thunder… Cats? HOOOO!

The live-action adaptation of the beloved 80s cartoon has been in development hell for years, but Thundercats finally roars onto the screen with Henry Cavill as the muscled, majestic Lion-O. And honestly? It’s better than it has any right to be.

The film opens on the dying planet Thundera. The young prince Lion-O (Cavill) is thrust into leadership after his father’s death, given the legendary Sword of Omens, and sent to find a new home for his people. But when their ship crashes on the mysterious planet of Third Earth, Lion-O discovers he’s been in suspended animation for years—his body aged, but his mind still that of a boy trying to be a king.

Cavill brings his signature earnestness to the role. He’s physically perfect as Lion-O, but he also sells the vulnerability—a man with a grown man’s body and a teenager’s doubts. The CGI for the Thundercats is mixed; Cheetara and Panthro look fantastic, but Snarf (yes, Snarf is here) is creepy and should have been left in the cartoon. The action is epic, with the Sword of Omens cutting through enemies in satisfyingly brutal ways. And the villain? Mumm-Ra (a genuinely terrifying motion-capture performance) will haunt your nightmares.

The Verdict: A surprisingly heartfelt and visually stunning adaptation. It’s not perfect, but it’s Thundercats, and that’s enough.

Final Thought: Thunder… Cots? Hooo!
