Spider-Man Meets Pikachu: Funnier, More Dynamic, But Still Missing the Climax
If the original Pokémon: Detective Pikachu was a hit thanks to Ryan Reynolds, then the version Tom Holland replaces Justice Smith as Tim Goodman is a high-energy upgrade – like Ash Ketchum drinking Red Bull and jumping straight into the noir world of Ryme City.
Plot: Still mysterious, but with a “teen hero” vibe
Tom Holland plays Tim – no longer the dour 21-year-old from the countryside, but a former child actor and street Pokémon trainer, who has just broken up with his girlfriend and is looking for his missing father. He meets Pikachu (still in Ryan Reynolds’ voice) in a dark alley, and the chemistry explodes immediately:
Pikachu: “Kid, you look like you’ve seen a Ghost-type.”
Tim (Holland): “I am the Ghost-type. My life’s a haunting.”
The film keeps the original plot – Mewtwo, purple gas R, Howard Clifford’s plot – but adds more Spider-Man-style parkour: Tim jumps from rooftop to rooftop with Psyduck, using a rope made from Eevee fur. The chase scene at Ryme City night market? Tom Holland somersaults among a flock of Pidgeots – CGI at its best, the audience applauds loudly.

Acting & technical highlights
Tom Holland: MVP. He brings the innocence + intelligence + natural humor that Justice Smith lacks. The scene where Tim cries when missing his father? Holland does it so realistically that the audience cries. The scene where he fights Mr. Mime with… pantomime? Laughs hard.
Ryan Reynolds: Still the soul of the film. But now, Pikachu teases Tim like a “brother”:
“You swing from buildings? Cute. I swing from lightning bolts.”
CGI & Action: Upgraded 100%. There’s a scene where Pikachu rides Charizard over Tower Bridge in the London fog (although the film is set in Ryme City, but who cares?). The fur, fire, water effects – as beautiful as the Avatar trailer.
Final twist (still there, but more “Holland”)
When Pikachu reveals that he is Tim’s father, Holland delivers brilliantly: from shock, anger, to hugging Pikachu and crying in the rain – the most emotional scene in the Pokémon series so far. Fans on X (Twitter) will be trending #PikaDad for a week.
Minus
Still missing a 6v6 Pokémon battle – only a few small moments. Tom Holland can do some acrobatics, but Charizard vs. Blastoise… still not. And if you don’t like “cute overload”, the first 30 minutes are a bit sweet.
Conclusion
Pokémon: Detective Pikachu – Tom Holland Cut is a funnier, more emotional, and more viral version. It turns a detective film into a Marvel-style family blockbuster, but still retains the Pokémon spirit. If Netflix did, it would surpass $1 billion in revenue – easily.
