World Record Broken: Adiah and Adrial—The Most Premature, Lightest Twins to Ever Survive

When Shakina Rajendram went into labor at just 21 weeks and 5 days—more than four months early—she was told the pregnancy was a loss and nothing could be done. Doctors declared: “Not viable. 0% chance of survival.”

Yet, one year later, both Adiah Laelynn and Adrial Luka Nadarajah (from Ontario, Canada) are alive and thriving, celebrating their first birthday today as the world’s most premature twins.

Shattering Records

Adiah and Adrial were born 126 days early, on 4 March 2022, breaking the previous record of 125 days. They were delivered at exactly 22 weeks gestational age.

Baby girl Adiah was born 23 minutes before her brother, weighing just 330 g (0.72 lb).
Baby boy Adrial weighed 420 g (0.92 lb).
Their combined weight was 750 g (1.65 lb), making them the lightest twins ever born to survive.
Miraculously, had they been born even 1 hour earlier, no attempt would have been made to save their lives. Both twins were successfully resuscitated.

The 6-Month Hospital Battle

The battle was far from over. Adiah and Adrial remained in the hospital for almost six months, facing serious complications typical of micro-preemies, such as brain bleeding, sepsis, and extremely thin, transparent skin. But they overcame it all.

The Nadarajah family’s story is a powerful testament to the strength of love, science, and hope, redefining the boundaries of neonatal viability.
