The Secret of Building 6: Miracle or Omen?

He’s a seasoned search and rescue worker, a man who’s faced disaster after disaster without flinching. But when a photo came through on my satellite phone, something was different. His hands trembled, and his eyes—usually so sharp—looked haunted.

The Abandoned Building and the Unmistakable Blanket

The message beneath the photo was simple: “We pulled the baby from Building 6.” I knew exactly what that meant. Building 6 had been abandoned for 9 months after a partial collapse. No families, no tenants. No reason for a baby to be there.

Yet in the photo, a baby lay wrapped in a fleece blanket—identical to one our aunt had stitched for her stillborn grandson 6 months ago. The stitches were unmistakable. Uneven, as our aunt always made them when she was tired. I couldn’t deny it. The blanket was the same.

The Impossible Truth

But how could it be? My cousin, still grieving her son, didn’t need this. Neither did our aunt, who had buried the child with the very same blanket.

The baby in the photo looked peaceful, alive. And yet, the impossible lingered, a truth I wasn’t ready to face. There was less than a 5% chance this was a random pattern coincidence.

I didn’t tell him. Not yet. Some secrets are too heavy to share.
