In Loving Memory of Firefighter Timothy G. Westhall

In Loving Memory of Firefighter Timothy G. Westhall
Engine 251 – 21 Years of Dedicated Service
It is with profound sorrow and deep respect that the department announces the passing of Retired Firefighter Timothy G. Westhall, who succumbed to his World Trade Center-related illness on October 12, 2025. Firefighter Westhall served our department and the people of this great city with courage, integrity, and compassion for more than two decades.
Timothy joined the fire service with a calling — not for recognition or reward, but out of a deep and unwavering desire to help others. From his earliest days in the academy, he was known for his quiet strength, his sharp sense of humor, and his ability to bring calm to the most chaotic of scenes. Those who worked beside him on Engine 251 describe him as the kind of firefighter everyone wanted on their crew — dependable, fearless, and always the first to volunteer when others hesitated.
During his 21 years on the job, Timothy responded to countless emergencies — fires, rescues, and disasters — where he put the safety of others above his own. His bravery shone brightest during and after the tragic events of September 11, 2001, when he worked tirelessly at Ground Zero alongside his brothers and sisters in uniform. He gave his strength, his health, and ultimately his life in service to that sacred duty.
Long after his retirement, Timothy remained deeply connected to the firefighting community. He attended memorials, mentored younger firefighters, and supported those who continued to suffer from 9/11-related illnesses. Even as his own health declined, he carried himself with quiet dignity and the same unwavering spirit that had guided him throughout his career.
Those who knew Timothy best remember not only the firefighter but the man — a devoted husband, loving father, and loyal friend. He was a storyteller who could make anyone laugh, a steady hand in a storm, and a heart big enough to hold the weight of those around him. His home was filled with warmth, laughter, and the deep pride of a life spent in service.
His passing is not just a loss to his family and our department, but to the entire firefighting brotherhood and the city he so proudly served. Though his watch has ended, his legacy endures — in the lives he saved, the colleagues he inspired, and the example he leaves behind for generations to follow.
The Westhall family has requested that services and burial be held privately, surrounded by close family and friends. The department will honor his memory with a formal tribute at a later date, ensuring that his years of dedication and sacrifice will never be forgotten.
We ask that all members take a moment to remember Firefighter Westhall — his laughter in the firehouse, his steady courage on the line, and the quiet kindness that touched so many lives.
May his memory be a blessing.
May his courage continue to guide us.
And may his soul rest in eternal peace.
Rest easy, Brother Westhall — we’ll take it from here.
