When Prison Break premiered on Aug. 29, 2005, its central idea was almost impossible to resist: Michael Scofield would deliberately get himself locked inside Fox River State Penitentiary, where his brother Lincoln Burrows was waiting on death row, and use an elaborate tattoo hiding the prison’s blueprints to break them both out.

What followed turned Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell into international stars and created one of television’s most memorable groups of inmates, guards, agents and fugitives.

The original series ran for four seasons before concluding in 2009, then returned for a nine-episode revival in 2017. Today, many of its stars have moved into very different corners of television and film—and the Prison Break universe itself is preparing for another generation.

Wentworth Miller — Michael Scofield

Michael Scofield was the brain behind everything.

Wentworth Miller played the structural engineer whose calm exterior concealed an extraordinarily complicated escape plan. The role earned Miller a Golden Globe nomination and remains the performance most closely associated with his career.

After Prison Break, Miller entered the DC television universe as Leonard Snart, better known as Captain Cold, appearing in The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow. He also continued writing and took roles in series including Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.

In 2020, Miller publicly said he was finished playing Michael because he no longer wanted to portray straight characters.

That does not mean his partnership with Dominic Purcell is over. The two were later announced as stars of Snatchback, a separate series about a team recovering hostages from dangerous locations around the world.

Dominic Purcell — Lincoln Burrows

Lincoln entered Prison Break as a man preparing to die for a murder he insisted he had not committed.

Purcell gave the series much of its physical intensity, while Lincoln’s relationship with Michael provided its emotional foundation.

After leaving Fox River behind, Purcell also joined the DC universe. He played pyromaniac criminal Mick Rory, or Heat Wave, alongside Miller’s Captain Cold in The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow.

The reunion delighted Prison Break fans because the actors who had spent years playing brothers were suddenly sharing the screen again as comic-book criminals.

Purcell is also attached to Snatchback with Miller, giving their long-running screen partnership another chapter without requiring Michael and Lincoln to return to prison.

Robert Knepper — Theodore “T-Bag” Bagwell

Few television villains of the 2000s created discomfort as effectively as Theodore Bagwell.

Robert Knepper made T-Bag unpredictable, manipulative and frequently terrifying. The character was never intended to be lovable, yet his distinctive mannerisms and ability to survive almost anything made him one of Prison Break’s most recognizable figures.

Knepper continued working steadily after the original series, appearing in Heroes, iZombie and David Lynch’s Twin Peaks revival, along with films including The Hunger Games: Mockingjay installments and Jack Reacher: Never Go Back.

He returned as T-Bag for the 2017 revival, where the character became unexpectedly important to Michael’s story again.

In 2017, several women accused Knepper of sexual misconduct; he denied the allegations.

Amaury Nolasco — Fernando Sucre

If Michael needed someone he could trust inside Fox River, Fernando Sucre was that person.

Amaury Nolasco gave the series humor and heart as Michael’s cellmate, a man whose greatest motivation was getting back to the woman he loved.

Nolasco remained busy after Prison Break, appearing in movies including Transformers and A Good Day to Die Hard. More recently, he played Frankie Cuevas Sr. in Hightown through 2024, appeared in Apple TV+’s Land of Women, and starred in the 2025 film BFFs.

More than two decades after Sucre first welcomed Michael into his cell, Nolasco remains active on screen.

Sarah Wayne Callies — Dr. Sara Tancredi

Sara Tancredi began as Fox River’s prison doctor.

She gradually became Michael’s ally, love interest and one of the emotional anchors of the entire series.

Sarah Wayne Callies went on to another television phenomenon almost immediately: The Walking Dead, where she played Lori Grimes. Later roles included Colony, Council of Dads and The Company You Keep, while she also expanded into directing.

But unlike many actors who rarely revisit old work, Callies has gone back inside Fox River in an unusual way.

She and Paul Adelstein launched Prison Breaking With Sarah & Paul, a rewatch podcast in 2024. As of 2026, they are still revisiting episodes, bringing in former cast and crew members and discussing how the series was made.

Rockmond Dunbar — Benjamin Miles “C-Note” Franklin

C-Note was one of the Fox River Eight who escaped with Michael and Lincoln.

Rockmond Dunbar brought warmth and urgency to a character whose criminal problems were constantly colliding with his devotion to his wife and daughter.

After Prison Break, Dunbar appeared in major television series including Sons of Anarchy and later became a regular on Fox’s 9-1-1, playing Michael Grant.

He also returned for the 2017 Prison Break revival, helping Lincoln search for Michael when evidence emerged that the supposedly dead escape mastermind was alive.

Wade Williams — Brad Bellick

Brad Bellick began as one of Fox River’s most unpleasant correctional officers.

Then Prison Break did something surprisingly effective with him.

Over several seasons, Bellick lost his authority, became a prisoner himself and eventually developed into a far more complicated character than the bullying guard viewers first met.

Wade Williams continued acting after leaving the show, with credits including Revenge, Mercy Street and Cowboy Bebop, as well as film and voice work.

Bellick’s journey remains one of the show’s strongest examples of how dramatically a supporting character could evolve.

William Fichtner — Alexander Mahone

William Fichtner did not arrive until Season 2, but Alexander Mahone quickly became one of the series’ essential characters.

The FBI agent assigned to hunt the Fox River escapees was frightening because he could think like Michael.

Eventually, the hunter became an ally.

Fichtner already had an extensive film career before joining the series and continued building it afterward, appearing in projects including The Dark Knight, 12 Strong and the sitcom Mom.

In 2026, he joined the second season of Netflix’s BEEF as wealthy country-club member Troy, demonstrating the career longevity that has made him one of the most consistently active members of the old Prison Break ensemble.

Paul Adelstein — Paul Kellerman

Kellerman entered the series as a ruthless government operative determined to keep Lincoln’s conspiracy buried.

His loyalties became much harder to predict as the story progressed.

Paul Adelstein went on to a long run as Cooper Freedman on Private Practice and appeared in other Shondaland productions including Scandal and Grey’s Anatomy. His later credits include Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce, The Menu and Marvel’s Agatha All Along.

He is now closely connected with Prison Break again through his weekly rewatch podcast with Sarah Wayne Callies, while he is also part of the cast of the 2026 crime thriller Crime 101.

Peter Stormare — John Abruzzi

John Abruzzi did not survive nearly as long as some of his fellow escapees, but he helped make Fox River dangerous from the beginning.

Peter Stormare gave the imprisoned mob boss an intimidating presence that made Michael’s early negotiations with him feel genuinely risky.

Stormare already had memorable roles in films such as Fargo before Prison Break and continued working extensively afterward, including appearances in John Wick: Chapter 2 and numerous television, film and video-game projects.

More recently, he reprised his mysterious role as Dr. Hill in the 2025 Until Dawn movie after originating the part in the video game. He is also confirmed to return as Dr. Hill in Until Dawn 2, scheduled for 2027.

Fox River Is Opening Again — But With New Prisoners

The original cast may no longer be assembling for a traditional Season 6, but Prison Break is not finished.

Hulu has ordered a new series set in the same universe, led by Emily Browning as Cassidy, a former soldier who takes a job as a corrections officer at a dangerous prison. Elgin James is leading the new incarnation, with original creator Paul Scheuring among the executive producers.

Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell are not returning as the new show’s leads. However, in 2026, cast member Lukas Gage teased that a couple of original characters could potentially appear, though specific cameos had not been publicly confirmed at that point.

That possibility shows how powerful the original ensemble remains.

Twenty-one years after Michael Scofield walked into Fox River with an escape route hidden across his body, viewers still remember Sucre’s loyalty, Mahone’s intelligence, Bellick’s transformation and T-Bag’s ability to make almost any scene uncomfortable.

The actors moved on.

The prison doors closed.

But for a generation that spent four seasons wondering whether Michael’s next impossible plan could actually work, the Fox River crew never completely escaped.
