Sex Offender Accused of Firing Fireworks at Police in Wild New Hampshire Standoff
A New Hampshire registered sex offender allegedly turned a routine police stop into a chaotic standoff, firing fireworks toward officers and a patrol car before being taken into custody, authorities said.
Rory Robertson, 46, was wanted on several outstanding warrants when police attempted to stop him shortly after 6 a.m. Monday in Durham.
Instead of pulling over, Robertson allegedly fled and eventually barricaded himself inside a home, according to the Durham Police Department.
Officers repeatedly ordered him to surrender.
Police said Robertson ignored their commands and then began aiming and launching fireworks toward officers positioned outside the residence.
One large shell-style firework reportedly came dangerously close to striking an officer before exploding underneath a police cruiser.
The bizarre barrage prompted authorities to issue a shelter-in-place warning for residents living near the property as officers worked to contain the standoff.

Robertson had reportedly been wanted on multiple warrants, including allegations of breaching bail, violating bail conditions and theft.
After remaining inside the home for roughly two hours, Robertson emerged shortly after 8 a.m., according to police.
But authorities said he did not surrender peacefully.
Police alleged that Robertson rushed toward officers, forcing them to deploy multiple non-lethal PepperBall rounds to subdue him.
No officers were injured during the confrontation.

Robertson suffered minor injuries and was treated before being transported to the Strafford County House of Corrections, police said.
Authorities said Robertson had previously been given multiple opportunities to turn himself in before the dramatic standoff unfolded.
He now faces additional charges, including reckless conduct with a deadly weapon and criminal threatening, among other allegations.
Robertson is a registered sex offender and was convicted in 2009 of felony sexual assault, according to court records cited by Foster’s Daily Democrat.

The newspaper also reported that Robertson is scheduled for a competency hearing in October in connection with alleged stalking and sexual assault offenses dating to 2024.
It was not immediately clear who was representing Robertson.
The allegations are pending, and Robertson is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
