Florida Woman Loses Arm in Terrifying Alligator Attack Before Good Samaritan Rushes to Save Her
A Florida woman survived a terrifying alligator attack after a nearly 10-foot reptile dragged her underwater and severely injured her arm while she was in the Silver River.
The attack happened Saturday, Aug. 8, in Marion County. The woman was swimming with a group when the alligator suddenly attacked, leaving her with catastrophic injuries. Her arm was later amputated, but she was discharged from the hospital and is now recovering at home.
Alligator Suddenly Attacks
According to reports, the woman was on a paddleboard when the large alligator struck and pulled her underwater.
She attempted to fight the animal off with a paddle, but the attack caused devastating injuries to her arm.
Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with the woman screaming for help as she struggled to stay above the water.
The alligator eventually released her, leaving her clinging to the paddleboard with severe bleeding.
Bystanders Race to Help
John Gamache was nearby with his father when they heard the woman’s cries.
Gamache immediately rushed toward her in a boat and helped frighten the alligator away. He then used a rope to tie off the injured arm in an effort to control the massive blood loss.
Another paddleboarder, Mike Head, also intervened and used his paddle to help drive the alligator away from the woman.
The quick actions of the bystanders were credited with helping keep the woman alive until she could receive professional medical treatment.

Woman’s Arm Had to Be Amputated
The woman’s injuries were extremely severe.
Reports said her arm was badly mangled, with exposed bone and extensive bleeding following the attack. Doctors ultimately had to amputate the injured limb.
Despite the traumatic injuries, she survived and was later released from the hospital.
Her family has expressed gratitude toward the people who rushed to her aid, particularly those who acted before emergency medical crews could arrive.

Nearly 10-Foot Alligator Captured
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission investigated the attack and eventually captured the suspected alligator.
The animal measured approximately 9 feet, 8 inches long and was removed from the area.
Silver Lake was temporarily closed following the attack as authorities dealt with the incident and worked to ensure public safety.

A Terrifying Reminder of Florida Wildlife
The attack comes amid several recent alligator incidents in Central Florida, including a fatal attack earlier this year.
Wildlife officials regularly warn people to exercise caution around Florida’s freshwater environments, where alligators are common.
For the woman attacked in the Silver River, however, the encounter became a fight for survival—and the rapid response of strangers may have made the difference between life and death.
She is now recovering at home after losing her arm, while the bystanders who came to her rescue are being praised for their extraordinary courage under terrifying circumstances.
