Garbage Truck Driver Rescues Abandoned Dog From Trash and Gives Him a Forever Home
HOUSTON, Texas — A routine garbage collection run turned into an unexpected rescue mission when a Houston waste management worker discovered a small dog trapped inside his garbage truck — and ultimately decided to give the animal a permanent home.
Gabriel Wiley was working his usual route in June when he emptied an eight-foot-tall trash bin into the back of his truck. Moments later, he noticed movement on a camera monitoring the truck’s hopper.
When he looked more closely, Wiley realized the unexpected passenger was a small, heavily matted dog.
A Shocking Discovery
Wiley, who has worked as a garbage truck driver for seven years, immediately stopped to figure out what was happening.
He believed the dog had been deliberately abandoned because the trash container was too tall for the animal to have climbed into by itself.
Wiley contacted a local SPCA for help, and staff members came to collect the dog.
But when the rescuers arrived, Wiley made an unexpected decision.
He wanted to keep the dog himself.

From Trash Truck to Forever Home
Wiley, who is a father and grandfather, said he quickly decided that the frightened animal belonged with him.
He called his wife to tell her what had happened, and she immediately agreed that they should adopt the dog.
The animal was taken for veterinary care, where he received grooming, neutering and a microchip.
After the care was completed, Wiley gave him a new name: Hopper — a fitting choice for a dog whose life changed while riding inside a garbage truck.
Soon, Hopper was reunited with the man who had rescued him.
“He’s found home,” Wiley said.
A Second Chance
What began as a disturbing discovery ultimately gave Hopper something he may never have had before: a safe and loving family.
Wiley’s decision also highlights how quickly an ordinary moment can become life-changing when someone chooses to intervene.
Instead of being left behind as discarded trash, Hopper now has a home, a name and a family that wanted him.
For Wiley, what could have been just another day on the garbage route became an unforgettable rescue — and the beginning of a new friendship with a dog who happened to be in the right truck at the right time.
