Earth, Wind & Fire drummer John Paris remains in critical condition after cardiac emergency

Earth, Wind & Fire drummer John Paris remains in critical condition after suffering a cardiac emergency that forced the band to cancel its San Francisco concert last week.
Paris was rushed to a hospital just minutes before Earth, Wind & Fire were scheduled to perform with Lionel Richie at Chase Center on Thursday.
According to an update shared by supporters, Paris was placed in a medically induced coma but briefly regained consciousness and immediately asked for his wife, musician Kathy Merrick.

“Where’s Kathy?” he reportedly asked.
He then looked at a close friend and joked, “Get me outta here.”
The brief moment of hope was followed by another setback. Paris’ blood pressure began rising and he struggled to breathe, prompting doctors to sedate him again so his body could stabilize.
Supporters said Paris remains under sedation while doctors closely monitor his condition and determine the safest path forward.
The update said he has shown slight responses when music is played, but warned that he still faces a long road to recovery.
“John’s journey is far from over,” supporters wrote, asking fans to continue praying for Paris, his wife Kathy, their daughter Kyla and everyone close to him.
A GoFundMe has also been launched by family and friends to help the couple deal with medical expenses, travel, lodging and other unexpected costs during Paris’ hospitalization.
Several Earth, Wind & Fire members have contributed to the fundraiser, including saxophonist Gary Bias and keyboardist Myron McKinley.
Paris’ medical emergency occurred just months after Lionel Richie himself suffered a health scare during a June performance in Minnesota. Richie became dizzy and felt strange onstage, forcing him to end the show early before later resuming his tour.

For now, Paris remains hospitalized as his loved ones wait for signs of improvement.
