A hobby metal detectorist in Norway has uncovered a rare medieval artifact believed to date back to around A.D. 1100 — a small gilded figurine depicting Jesus Christ. The discovery was made in a windswept field near Åndalsnes, a coastal town in western Norway.
Kim Erik Dybvik, who has spent years searching for historical objects, said the find came as he and a fellow detectorist were preparing to end their search. Instead of packing up, they uncovered what experts believe is a centuries-old representation of Christ on the cross, still showing traces of its original gilding.
Under Norwegian law, historically significant artifacts must be reported to authorities, and the figurine has since been handed over for professional conservation and analysis.
Archaeologists say the piece likely dates to the medieval period, offering insight into early Christian art and religious life in Scandinavia nearly a millennium ago.
For the treasure hunter, the moment was unforgettable — a rare intersection of patience, history, and faith beneath an open Nordic sky.
