A Florida man was arrested after allegedly confronting and attacking a police officer inside a Fort Lauderdale hospital, according to authorities.

Ronald Jeffrey Johnson, 51, was taken into custody on August 29 following an incident at Broward Health Medical Center, where a Fort Lauderdale police officer was working an off-duty security detail.

According to the arrest report, Johnson was in the emergency department and was allegedly yelling at medical staff, disturbing patients in the waiting area. The officer was called to the scene to address the situation.

When Johnson noticed the officer, authorities said his attention shifted toward him. He allegedly told the officer, “I want to fight you,” before moving toward him.

The officer reported that Johnson then grabbed him and resisted attempts to restrain him, leading to a physical struggle.

Police eventually gained control of Johnson and detained him inside the hospital.

Johnson was later medically cleared and transported to the Broward Sheriff’s Office Main Jail. A booking photograph showed him with noticeable swelling and injuries to his face following the confrontation.

He faces several charges, including aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting an officer with violence, assault on an officer and disorderly conduct.

Authorities also said Johnson was wanted in Georgia for allegedly failing to appear in court in connection with a previous terroristic-threats case.

The officer involved in the hospital confrontation was also injured, suffering a laceration to his left hand that required multiple stitches.

Johnson was being held on an $8,500 bond, according to authorities.

The allegations described in the arrest report have not been established as facts in court, and Johnson is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
