A 20-year-old Michigan man died after being struck by lightning in Florida just days after moving to the Sunshine State to begin what was supposed to be an exciting new chapter through the Disney College Program.

Matthew Eric Jenkins, 20, of Shelby Township, Michigan, was found unresponsive near the Celebration Hotel in Celebration, Florida, on Tuesday evening following a sudden thunderstorm, authorities said.

Jenkins had moved to Florida only the previous week to begin his internship through the Disney College Program.

Young Man Sought Shelter During Sudden Storm
According to the Osceola County Medical Examiner’s Office, Jenkins had been running in a park near the Celebration Hotel on Bloom Street when a sudden storm rolled through the area.

As the rain began to fall, Jenkins reportedly sought shelter beneath a tree.

Witnesses said lightning struck at approximately 6:30 p.m. and they soon noticed that a young man had collapsed.

Disney Mourns New College Program Intern
Jenkins had only recently begun his Disney College Program journey after relocating from Michigan to Florida.

A Disney spokesperson said the company was deeply saddened by his death and expressed sympathy for his family, friends and loved ones.

“He had just begun his Disney College Program journey,” the spokesperson said, adding that Jenkins would always be remembered as part of the Disney community.

His death has left those who knew him mourning a young man whose new life in Florida had begun only days before the sudden tragedy.

The circumstances surrounding the lightning strike are being reviewed by authorities.

Felipe Costa, who witnessed the incident, rushed toward Jenkins after realizing what had happened.

Costa and another woman immediately began performing CPR while waiting for emergency responders.

“There was a lady behind me. She came and started CPR also as soon as possible,” Costa told WESH.

Extensive Resuscitation Efforts Could Not Save Him
Emergency personnel arrived shortly afterward and rushed Jenkins to Celebration Hospital.

Despite extensive efforts to revive him, Jenkins was pronounced dead at the hospital, according to the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office and the medical examiner’s report.

Hospital staff later informed the medical examiner that Jenkins appeared to have lightning-related exit wounds on his feet, according to documents obtained by The Post.
