SONIC 4

Sonic 4: Shadow’s Reckoning

Rating: 4.5/5 Gotta Go Fast Again

The Sonic movie franchise has become one of Hollywood’s most surprising success stories—a video game adaptation that actually understands its source material, balancing humor, heart, and high-speed action. Sonic 4: Shadow’s Reckoning continues that winning streak, delivering a darker, more emotionally complex chapter that expands the universe in ways fans have been dreaming of.

Plot:

Set after the events of Sonic 3, the film finds Sonic (Ben Schwartz) and his crew—Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey) and Knuckles (Idris Elba)—settled into life on Earth. But the shadow (pun intended) of Shadow the Hedgehog (Keanu Reeves) still looms large. When a covert government organization steals G.U.N. technology to create a devastating weapon, Sonic and his friends must intervene. They’re joined by a new ally: Amy Rose (Scarlett Johansson), a brilliant young scientist with a giant hammer and a complicated connection to Shadow’s past. As the battle escalates, Sonic must confront the ultimate question: can the darkness within someone ever truly be redeemed?

The Good:

  • Keanu Reeves is Shadow: As predicted, Reeves is flawless casting. His signature low, measured voice brings a gravitas to Shadow that transforms the character from a simple antagonist into a tragic anti-hero. The dynamic between Sonic and Shadow—light versus darkness, hope versus trauma—is the emotional core of the film.

  • Scarlett Johansson as Amy Rose: Johansson brings intelligence, strength, and unexpected depth to Amy. She’s not just “the girl who likes Sonic”; she’s a warrior with her own agenda, and her hammer-wielding fight sequences are some of the film’s highlights.

  • Emotional Depth: Sonic 4 isn’t afraid to go to darker places. It tackles themes of grief, forgiveness, and what it means to find family after losing everything. Shadow’s backstory is handled with genuine care, and his journey toward self-acceptance will hit you right in the feels.

  • Action and Speed: The action sequences are a massive step up. A chase sequence where Sonic and Shadow race through Tokyo at supersonic speed—ripping through subways, skyscrapers, and bullet trains—is pure cinematic adrenaline.
