Rodney Morrow and Rychelle Morrow are facing animal abuse charges in connection with the Aug. 26 attack

Two people have been charged in connection with an Aug. 26 pit bull attack in Charlotte, N.C.

Rychelle Morrow and Rodney Morrow both face seven counts of animal abandonment, cruelty to animals, failure to vaccinate, and failure to display rabies tags, dangerous dog attack exceeding $100 in injuries, and unsafe conveyance, according to a charging affidavit obtained by PEOPLE.

Rychelle, 44, and Rodney, 75, were arrested and booked on Sept. 16, according to inmate records reviewed by PEOPLE. They were both released after posting bond on Sept. 18.

According to the affidavit, deputies with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Sheriff’s Department and Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office responded to a “dog mauling” on Claiborne Woods Road in Charlotte on Aug. 26. Police observed seven dogs that were “actively attacking” neighbors Haley Wright and Aaron Westphar.

The responding officer approached the victims and “pulled her taser in an attempt to taze the dogs,” according to the affidavit. One of the dogs was struck by the taser and ceased attacking the victims.

After one dog was struck by the taser, the affidavit alleges that the responding officer “heard someone begging her, multiple times, to shoot the dogs.” The officer shot and killed one of the dogs involved in the mauling, before the rest “scattered throughout the street,” per the affidavit.

A third victim, Angela Johnson, was later attacked by one of the dogs, which was also shot by responding police, per the affidavit.

Following an investigation, authorities determined that the seven dogs were “being conveyed in an unsafe and cruel manner in the back of a Uhaul Box-Truck,” per the document.

Video footage obtained by investigators allegedly shows the U-Haul driving down the 7000 block of Claiborne Woods Road when it “hits a bump and the rear cargo container opens, allowing all 7 dogs to spill out of the rear.”

Police then claim the dogs were abandoned, as “the owner did not stop the truck and return to the truck for the dogs.”

After the dogs fell out of the truck, they were captured attacking all three victims on security footage obtained by police, the affidavit claims.

Wright, Westphar, and Johnson “were all hospitalized with extensive injuries,” the affidavit alleges. Animal Control, which assisted CMPD and the CMSD in their investigation, determined that “none of the dogs have rabies vaccinations on record and there were no active rabies tags being displayed on the dogs.”

A family member of Wright started a GoFundMe to assist with her and her partner Westphar’s medical expenses following the alleged attack.

The description of the fundraiser claims Wright “suffered extensive injuries to her entire body.”

The fundraiser claims that the suspects were “being evicted” from a home near Wright’s on the day of the attacks, and had the dogs in the U-Haul as they were moving out of the property. “The dogs were completely on top of her while she and her partner, Aaron, fought desperately to save her life,” the fundraiser adds.

Wright spent 10 days in the hospital, per the fundraiser, where she “underwent emergency surgeries and received over 5 feet of sutures and a wound vac to close the many lacerations across her body.”

As of publication, the fundraiser has raised just over $10,000 of its $40,000 goal.

Johnson, the third attack victim, told local outlet WBTV that she required a rabies vaccination and “several stitches” after the attack.
