RICHMOND, Mo. – A county prosecutor in Missouri has been removed from office over allegations of sexual misconduct that include inappropriate relationships with a criminal defendant as well as a criminal defense attorney whom she was trying cases against.
Ray County Prosecutor Camille Johnston was temporarily removed from her elected post last week by a Missouri judge after an investigation by Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway led to a quo warranto petition filed to force her removal from office.

In a sit-down interview Monday, Hanaway said Johnston “used the court docket as her dating app.”
“She has breached the public trust in every way,” Hanaway said.

The allegations against Johnston, a Republican who has served as Ray County’s elected prosecutor since 2015, include inappropriate sexual relations that Hanaway said were discovered by courthouse staff.
“We allege in our complaint for the quo (warranto) that she had sexual relations with a defense counsel, a potential defendant, an illegal immigrant to whom she gave her car so that he could abscond,” Hanaway said.

“It’s unbelievable behavior, including … members of the courthouse walking in on her during one of these incidents.”

The full list of misconduct that the attorney general alleges:
Engaged in a romantic relationship with a defensive attorney representing numerous criminal defendants in matters prosecuted by Johnston.
Engaged in a romantic relationship with a defendant and terminated an employee after the employee discovered the relationship.
Engaged in a romantic relationship with an undocumented immigrant who was being prosecuted for sexual assault in Ray County and provided title to her vehicle to that defendant to help him in absconding.
Hanaway said Monday that her office gave Johnston the opportunity to resign.
“We didn’t go right for the (quo warranto), we gave her an opportunity to do the right thing and resign,” Hanaway said. “She wouldn’t take that opportunity, which is stunning to me.”

Just outside of Kansas City, Ray County has a population of a little more than 23,000 people.
Johnston was first elected to the position in 2014 and was re-elected in 2018 and 2022. According to the Missouri Ethics Commission, Johnston is running for another term this year.

Johnston couldn’t be reached as of this publication. A representative at the Ray County Courthouse told NewsNation local affiliate KTVI they had no comment.
“I’m glad it’s being publicly exposed,” Hanaway said. “I want people to know that wherever corruption happens in the state, this office is going to go after it.”
