A California man was sentenced recently to 16 years to life in prison for fatally stabbing his estranged wife’s boyfriend as he slept in 2017.
Arturo Hernandez, now 33, was estranged from his wife when she began dating Anthony Freas, who was 25 at the time.
Hernandez was angered upon learning of their relationship and called his wife one night, but she did not answer. According to the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office, he then trespassed into her apartment, where she and Freas were sleeping. Hernandez entered the bedroom, stabbing Freas several times before fleeing the apartment.

Police later received an emergency call regarding the stabbing. Freas was found with “at least one stab wound to his upper body,” according to a release from the Sacramento Police Department. Authorities performed CPR on Freas, who was taken to the hospital before being pronounced dead.
Hernandez subsequently fled to Mexico, where he spent around five years before being taken into custody by the FBI and Mexican authorities in July 2023, according to reporting by The Sacramento Bee. He was then extradited to Sacramento for trial.
On March 24, Hernandez was convicted of second-degree murder by a jury. On July 10, he received his sentence.
