Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” is the summer event of the year, and getting a ticket to see it in a particular IMAX format is hard to come by.

“The Odyssey” is the first movie to be shot entirely with IMAX cameras, and the director and the movie’s stars have urged fans to watch it in IMAX 70mm for the best experience.

However, in Los Angeles and New York, all IMAX 70mm tickets are sold out through Aug. 19, according to Variety, with screenings in London selling out through Sept. 10, seven weeks after the movie’s release.

In its opening weekend, the Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway and Tom Holland film grossed $123.5 million at the domestic box office and over $263 million worldwide.

While more screenings in that format will be released, there isn’t enough IMAX 70mm equipment to keep up with demand.

In the U.S., only 25 theaters can screen the movie in IMAX 70mm because those film projectors haven’t been made in decades, IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond told Variety.

Globally, there are only 41 of those premium format projectors.

“There’s certainly more demand. The problem is they haven’t made new IMAX film projectors in about 50 years,” he said. So, we retrofit them, rebuild them, and part of our strategy is to see how far we can take it. But certainly, demand-driven, I’d like to see more.”

The parts used to build the film projectors “simply no longer exist,” sources told Variety.
