Stephen A. Smith believes the Black community is suspicious about the nature of Nolan Wells’ death.

Smith’s comments on “CUOMO” come hours after it was revealed that the results of a private autopsy came back inconclusive.

Preliminary findings showed the 18-year-old’s cause and manner of death were undetermined and require further investigation, per Roger Mitchell, the president of the National Medical Association.

Rumors and allegations of racism have spread since news of Wells’ death became a national story following his July Fourth weekend disappearance.

“In the year 2026, we find ourselves sensing and being highly suspicious of, you know, vicious circumstances,” Smith said.

“There was a Black dude who was the only Black dude in attendance, and he’s the only person, the human being, that didn’t come home alive. Something’s wrong with that picture, and the people that were there with him have no answers. Something highly suspicious about that,” he added.

Wells, a community college football player, died after a Fourth of July boat trip to a remote Mississippi island. Investigators are still trying to piece together what happened to him.

The teenager was last seen on Horn Island on July 4 after his friends said he chose to stay behind on the island. His body was found days later, and his family is working with civil rights attorney Ben Crump.

Investigators believe Wells may have drowned, and say they haven’t found evidence of foul play. Wells’ family disagrees and is conducting their own independent investigation, including a private autopsy, paid for by former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

“It would be irresponsible to accuse folks of murder or to accuse folks of criminal behavior that lent itself towards this kid being killed,” Smith said.

“But the bottom line is, is that if you sent your son out, and they go on a boat trip with these guys, and he’s the only one that doesn’t come back alive, and he’s the only Black individual that was there, you better believe that the Black community is going to be up in arms, as well as we should be, because that is highly, highly suspicious.”

“It’s not just that he’s deceased, that he’s gone. It’s that there’s no explanation. Nobody knows anything,” he added.
