A Kentucky family is speaking out after their one-year-old son was severely burned by a kitchen appliance.

Speaking with local outlets LEX 18 and WKYT, the family of 22-month-old Daelyn Davis shared that he was rushed to Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville after he got hold of a Crock-Pot that was sitting on the counter in his Somerset, Ky., home on Friday, July 17.

Describing the moment she learned about the incident, Daelyn’s aunt, Abigail Davis, told LEX that she got a call saying that her nephew was being airlifted to Nashville.

“I was like, ‘What do you mean?’ And [Daelyn’s mother] said that he had pulled the cord down on himself,” Davis shared.

“Oh my God, I was devastated. I was heartbroken, like my heart was racing,” she recounted. “I couldn’t go back to sleep, that’s for sure. I was just freaking out.”

According to the family, Daelyn’s mom had been cooking a toast in the appliance while it was plugged into an extension cord.

“She’s cooked it like that multiple times before,” Davis shared with WKYT. “I guess my nephew got a hold of it when my sister walked into the other room.”

Crock-Pot’s parent company, Newell Brands, did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment about the incident.

Doctors have since shared that Daelyn sustained third-degree burns to 20% of his body, including his right side and part of his head, LEX reported. The family is now trying to help him manage on a day-to-day basis.

“The past couple of days, he’s been up and walking around and drinking on his own,” the boy’s aunt explained to LEX.

“He’s not doing so good with the feeding tube. So they’re trying to figure that out right now. He’s just been throwing up a lot here lately,” Davis said.

According to the family, Daelyn was scheduled to undergo a skin graft procedure on Monday.

Davis also shared that her sister, Daelyn’s mother, is a first-time mom who has been struggling with guilt since the toddler’s injuries. Davis has opted to set up a GoFundMe page to assist the family with medical and living expenses in the wake of the incident.

“Everything is new to her as it is. She’s already definitely feeling the guilt from this and blaming herself, and she’s dealing with a lot of backlash already. But she just wants her son to get better. When one parent hurts, we all hurt and that’s just what I keep saying,” Davis told LEX.

“My family is very thankful and grateful for all the support from everyone we’re receiving — all the prayers, just the good vibes and everything sent our way — is really what we are the most thankful for,” she told WKYT of the fundraiser, which has garnered more than $9,000 in donations to date.
