A Nebraska family has been reunited with their beloved dog after five heartbreaking years apart, thanks to an unexpected social media post that led them to their long-lost pet more than 600 miles away.

Chong, a light-brown dog, disappeared in 2021 after escaping from his family’s home in Lincoln, Nebraska. His owner, Inmaculada Jackman, was devastated by his disappearance, but she and her family refused to give up hope that Chong was still out there somewhere.

Even as the years went by, Jackman continued searching for any sign of her missing dog.

“I still looked for him,” Jackman told local news station WKRC. “We still went to our old neighborhood and drove around, looking to see if we could spot anyone walking him or if he was running around somewhere.”

For five years, the family had no idea where Chong was or what had happened to him. Still, they held on to the hope that one day they might see him again.

That day finally came when a friend sent Jackman a social media post about a dog who had recently been found behind a truck stop in Indiana. The location was roughly 642 miles away from the Nebraska home where Chong had disappeared.

Jackman immediately contacted the Hendricks County Animal Shelter, hoping the dog was the companion she had spent years searching for. To her incredible relief, the shelter confirmed that the dog was indeed Chong.

However, there was an unexpected complication. During the years he had been missing, someone had microchipped Chong. Because of the information attached to the microchip, shelter staff were required to contact the person who had registered it before they could release the dog to Jackman.

The shelter told Jackman that the person listed on the microchip would have three days to respond and claim Chong. If they did not respond within that period, the shelter would be able to release him to his original family.

“They told me that they were all hoping and praying that the other people did not contact them,” Jackman recalled.

Fortunately, the three-day waiting period passed without a response. Jackman was finally able to officially re-adopt Chong and bring him home after five years of uncertainty.

The reunion was an emotional moment for everyone involved. At first, Chong appeared confused when he was reunited with Jackman, having spent five years away from the family he once knew. But it did not take long for the dog to become comfortable again.

Heartwarming footage from the animal shelter captured the touching reunion. Chong eventually cuddled up with Jackman and appeared to express his happiness with excited barks, creating a moment that brought tears and smiles to those watching.

Chong also had another family member waiting for him at home. While he was missing, Jackman’s family had adopted another dog named Che Che. After five years apart, Chong was now back with his original family and had a new canine brother to welcome him home.

For Jackman, Chong’s incredible journey is more than just a happy ending. She hopes the story will inspire other families who have lost their pets and are still waiting for them to come home.

Her message is simple but powerful: never give up hope.

“Never lose hope,” Jackman told WKRC. “It’s been five years, and we found him.”

After five years, hundreds of miles, and countless unanswered questions, Chong’s story has finally come full circle — proving that sometimes, even after years have passed, a lost pet can still find its way back home.
