French court upholds Le Pen’s conviction but shortens ban on running for office

A French appeals court has upheld a conviction on far-right leader Marine Le Pen for misusing EU funds but shortened a ban on her running for elected office, opening the door for her to stand in next year’s presidential election.

The court rules that Le Pen must serve a three-year jail term; however, it said two of those years were suspended and it ordered her to wear an electronic tag for one year.
The ruling means that she could still run for office in France’s 2027 presidential election while wearing an electronic ankle monitor.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
