Kaylee Hottle, the Deaf Actress Who Became Kong’s Youngest Friend, Dies at 18

‘Godzilla vs. Kong’ star Kaylee Hottle killed in Maryland car crash
Kaylee Hottle, the young actress who captured audiences as Jia in the Godzilla vs. Kong franchise, has died at just 18 years old.
Hottle was killed in a car crash in Ijamsville, Maryland, in the early hours of July 21, according to the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office. She was a passenger in a 1995 Honda Accord when the vehicle left the road and struck a culvert. Authorities said excessive speed was believed to have contributed to the crash.
The actress was taken to a trauma center but was later pronounced dead. The 19-year-old driver survived with injuries that were not considered life-threatening, while another passenger declined medical treatment. The investigation remains ongoing.

For many moviegoers, Hottle will forever be remembered as Jia, the Deaf orphan who formed an extraordinary connection with Kong in Godzilla vs. Kong (2021). She returned to the role three years later in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
What made Hottle’s performance particularly meaningful was that she brought her own experience as a Deaf person to the character. Hottle came from a multigenerational Deaf family and was a native American Sign Language user. Her portrayal helped bring Deaf representation to one of Hollywood’s biggest monster franchises.
Her father, Joshua Hottle, confirmed her death in an emotional video shared in American Sign Language. Her family later received an outpouring of support from fans, classmates and members of the entertainment industry.
Hottle’s career was still in its early stages. She had made her feature-film debut with Godzilla vs. Kong and later appeared in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and an episode of Magnum P.I. Her performance in the sequel also earned her a Saturn Award nomination.
She was also a senior at the Texas School for the Deaf when she died. The school mourned her as a member of its community and asked the public to respect her family’s privacy.
At only 18, Hottle’s Hollywood journey had barely begun.

But through Jia, she gave millions of viewers a character who communicated without spoken words — and showed that a Deaf actress could stand at the center of one of cinema’s biggest blockbuster franchises.
Her life was tragically short, but the impact of the role that introduced her to the world will remain part of the MonsterVerse.
