Kaylee Hottle’s Final Journey From a breakout role beside Kong to a heartbreaking goodbye at 18

Kaylee Hottle was only a teenager when Hollywood audiences first met her as Jia, the Deaf girl who could communicate with Kong through American Sign Language.
Four years after making her big-screen debut, her promising career has come to a heartbreaking end.
Hottle died on July 21, 2026, following a single-vehicle crash in Ijamsville, Maryland. Authorities said the car she was riding in veered off Windsor Road and struck a culvert at around 2:52 a.m.
The crash involved a 19-year-old driver and two passengers, including Hottle. Investigators said excessive speed was believed to be a contributing factor. Hottle was transported to a trauma center but died from injuries sustained in the crash.

The news was first shared publicly by her father, Joshua, through an emotional American Sign Language video. Her family is Deaf, and Hottle herself had grown up using ASL as her primary language.
That background became an important part of her acting career.
When Hottle was cast as Jia in Godzilla vs. Kong, she wasn’t simply playing a Deaf character — she was bringing authentic Deaf representation to a massive global audience.
Jia was an orphan from Skull Island who developed a unique bond with Kong. Because of that connection, she became one of the emotional centers of the story. Hottle reprised the character in the 2024 sequel, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
Her co-stars also made an effort to communicate with her. Alexander Skarsgård and others learned American Sign Language while working with Hottle, helping create a more inclusive environment on set.
Away from the MonsterVerse, Hottle appeared in commercials and had a role in Magnum P.I. Her work earned her recognition within the Deaf community as well as in Hollywood.

Her death has prompted tributes from colleagues and fans who remembered not only the character she played, but the representation she brought to the screen.
She was still a student, still building her career and still had years ahead of her.
Instead, a young actress who once stood beside Kong on the world’s biggest movie screens is now being remembered at just 18.
For fans of the franchise, Jia’s final moments on screen will now carry an entirely different weight — a reminder of the young performer behind the character and the career that ended far too soon.
