Mother and Two Daughters Killed in Fiery Wrong-Way Crash After Birthday Celebration

What was supposed to be a joyful night celebrating a teenager’s upcoming 17th birthday ended in unimaginable tragedy when a mother and her two daughters were killed in a fiery highway crash in California.

Vanessa Schoettler and her daughters, Kloie and Kylie, were traveling home after attending a concert in Fresno when their Honda Accord was struck by a wrong-way driver on Highway 99 near Bakersfield early Sunday morning.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash happened shortly before 12:45 a.m. near 7th Standard Road. A northbound driver traveling in the wrong direction collided with the family’s vehicle and another southbound vehicle.

The impact caused the Honda Accord to catch fire. Vanessa, Kloie and Kylie were pronounced dead at the scene.

The night had been especially meaningful for the family. Loved ones said the three had gone to the concert to celebrate Kloie’s upcoming 17th birthday, which was supposed to be on August 20.

Instead of celebrating a birthday together, their family is now preparing to say goodbye to all three.

A fundraiser created in their memory described the loss as devastating, saying what should have been a weekend filled with memories had instead left the family grieving the deaths of a mother and her two daughters.

The tragedy also means that Vanessa’s son and Kloie’s brother will face his own birthday without them. He is set to turn 16 on the same day Kloie would have turned 17.

The other vehicles involved in the collision were also badly damaged.

A 44-year-old man driving a BMW 530i and his passenger were taken to a hospital with severe injuries. Two people traveling in a Chevrolet Colorado suffered minor injuries, according to authorities.

Images from the scene showed a heavily damaged vehicle, emergency crews and the remains of the burned-out Honda along the highway.

For the family, however, the crash is about far more than the wreckage left behind.

Photographs shared by loved ones show Vanessa smiling beside Kloie and Kylie during what should have been a happy night out. Those images now serve as painful reminders of the final moments the three spent together.

A GoFundMe campaign has been established to help with funeral and memorial expenses, immediate family needs and support for Vanessa’s surviving son as he adjusts to life without his mother and sisters.

The fundraiser had raised approximately $31,000 toward a $50,000 goal at the time of the report.

Meanwhile, the California Highway Patrol continues investigating the crash. Authorities have asked anyone who may have information about what happened to come forward.

For a family that left home expecting nothing more than music, laughter and a birthday celebration, the night ended with an unbearable loss.

A mother and her two daughters went out to make memories for a 17th birthday. Instead, their family was left with memories of three people who should have been coming home.
