Wladimir Klitschko Makes a Promise to Daughter Kaya After Hayden Panettiere’s Death at 36

For Wladimir Klitschko, mourning Hayden Panettiere also means protecting the way their 11-year-old daughter will remember her mother.
Two days after Panettiere’s sudden death at 36, the former heavyweight boxing champion shared a deeply personal message about the actress, their years together and the daughter they raised across two very different lives.
Klitschko, 50, posted an old family photograph showing himself with Panettiere and their daughter, Kaya Evdokia Klitschko, sitting on her mother’s shoulders. The image captured a happier chapter long before Panettiere’s final years became marked by personal struggles, painful decisions and separation from the child she loved.
“Our family is going through a time of profound shock and grief,” Klitschko wrote on Aug. 18.
He said Panettiere had died “far too soon” and acknowledged that although they were no longer a couple, she had remained an important part of his life because she was Kaya’s mother.
Then he made the promise that gave his tribute its deepest emotional weight.
Klitschko said he would speak about Panettiere with respect and make sure Kaya remembered the person her mother had been.
A Relationship That Spanned Nearly a Decade
Panettiere and Klitschko first met in 2008 and began dating the following year.
Their relationship unfolded in the public eye, bringing together an American actress who had been performing since childhood and a Ukrainian boxer who became a heavyweight world champion.
They dated on and off for nine years, eventually becoming engaged.
Their daughter, Kaya, was born in December 2014.
For a time, they appeared together as a family at public events and in photographs. But by 2018, the relationship had ended for good.
What followed was one of the most painful periods of Panettiere’s life.
As she struggled with alcoholism and substance abuse, Klitschko took full custody of Kaya. Their daughter primarily lived with him in Europe.
Panettiere later spoke openly about how devastating that decision had been.
In a 2022 interview, she described signing over full custody as the most heartbreaking thing she had ever done.
The decision became even more emotionally complicated because it was sometimes interpreted publicly as though Panettiere had simply chosen to walk away from her child.
She strongly rejected that characterization.

Hayden Said She Never “Gave Away” Her Daughter
Earlier in 2026, Panettiere revisited the custody decision during a conversation on Jay Shetty’s On Purpose podcast.
She said the idea that she had “given away” Kaya could not have been further from the truth.
For Panettiere, the separation was not an absence of love. It was a decision made during a period when she was seeking treatment and dealing with serious personal problems.
She described the experience of no longer having her daughter with her every day as almost impossible to put into words.
The emotions, she said, came layered together.
That sense of loss followed Panettiere for years.
Kaya remained primarily with Klitschko in Europe, while Panettiere worked on rebuilding her life and confronting the struggles she had previously kept private.
Even after mother and daughter stopped sharing the same daily routine, Panettiere repeatedly made clear that Kaya remained central to her emotional world.

Her Memoir Raised One Fear Above the Others
Panettiere’s relationship with her daughter became especially important as she prepared to publish her 2026 memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning.
The book forced her to reveal some of the darkest and most painful parts of her life.
But telling the truth also raised another question: What would happen when Kaya eventually read it?
At an event in May, Panettiere said there was one thing she desperately wanted her daughter to understand.
None of it was Kaya’s fault.
Panettiere said she loved her daughter deeply and understood that the material in the book would be difficult for an 11-year-old to process.
She intended to continue protecting Kaya while she was still young.
Those comments now carry an added poignancy.
Only three months later, Panettiere was dead.
And the responsibility of preserving her memory for Kaya had shifted in a devastating new way to the child’s father.

Klitschko Remembered Both Her Talent and Her Struggles
In his tribute, Klitschko did not reduce Panettiere’s life to its most difficult chapters.
He acknowledged both sides of her story.
He remembered an actress who had built an extraordinary career through talent while also facing what he described as darker aspects of a demanding industry.
Panettiere had worked in entertainment from childhood and became known through projects including Remember the Titans, Heroes and Nashville.
But behind those accomplishments were years of struggles she later discussed publicly, including addiction and the consequences it had on her personal life.
Klitschko wrote that none of those complications could erase the time they had shared or the place Panettiere continued to occupy in the lives of those closest to her.
That included Kaya.
His words suggested that whatever had happened between the former couple after their engagement ended, their shared history as parents remained larger than the breakup itself.

Hayden’s Death Came Suddenly
Panettiere died on Sunday, Aug. 16, in Greenville, South Carolina.
Police and emergency medical personnel were called to a residence around 1:50 p.m. after receiving a report about an unresponsive woman.
The woman was later identified as Panettiere.
At the time Klitschko released his statement, her official cause of death had not been confirmed.
Dispatch audio from around the time of the emergency included references to an overdose and cardiac arrest, but authorities had not announced a final determination.
Klitschko did not speculate about how Panettiere died.
Instead, his message focused on grief.
He extended condolences to her parents, friends and fans and wrote that young, talented people like Panettiere should not leave the world so early.
He also asked the public to respect the family’s privacy and said he did not intend to speak further about her death for the time being.

Kaya Is Now at the Center of What Comes Next
Panettiere’s death changes the meaning of a family arrangement that had already carried enormous emotional weight.
For years, Kaya primarily lived with her father while Panettiere tried to recover and rebuild.
Panettiere had spoken about the pain of that distance.
She also worried about how her daughter would someday interpret the most difficult parts of her life.
Would Kaya understand why certain decisions had been made?
Would she believe any of those struggles were somehow connected to her?
Panettiere wanted to make sure the answer was no.
Now Klitschko has made his own pledge.
His daughter will grow up without her mother physically present, but he intends to make sure Panettiere does not disappear from Kaya’s life.
He will talk about her.
He will protect the memory of her.
And he will make sure Kaya knows the woman behind the headlines, the struggles and the mistakes was still her mother — someone who loved her deeply.
A Promise After a Complicated Love Story
Panettiere and Klitschko’s relationship did not have a simple ending.
They fell in love, became engaged, had a daughter and ultimately separated.
Their lives moved in different directions.
But Kaya remained the permanent connection between them.
Panettiere spent her final years trying to explain the painful decision that had placed her daughter primarily in Klitschko’s care. She wanted Kaya to understand that distance did not mean rejection.
After her death, Klitschko’s tribute answered that fear in a quiet way.
He did not promise to hide Panettiere’s complicated past.
He promised to remember her with respect.
And for the 11-year-old daughter left behind, that may become one of the most important parts of her mother’s legacy.
