For Wladimir Klitschko, mourning Hayden Panettiere also means protecting the way their 11-year-old daughter will remember her mother.

Two days after Panettiere’s sudden death at 36, the former heavyweight boxing champion shared a deeply personal message about the actress, their years together and the daughter they raised across two very different lives.

Klitschko, 50, posted an old family photograph showing himself with Panettiere and their daughter, Kaya Evdokia Klitschko, sitting on her mother’s shoulders. The image captured a happier chapter long before Panettiere’s final years became marked by personal struggles, painful decisions and separation from the child she loved.

“Our family is going through a time of profound shock and grief,” Klitschko wrote on Aug. 18.

He said Panettiere had died “far too soon” and acknowledged that although they were no longer a couple, she had remained an important part of his life because she was Kaya’s mother.

Then he made the promise that gave his tribute its deepest emotional weight.

Klitschko said he would speak about Panettiere with respect and make sure Kaya remembered the person her mother had been.

A Relationship That Spanned Nearly a Decade

Panettiere and Klitschko first met in 2008 and began dating the following year.

Their relationship unfolded in the public eye, bringing together an American actress who had been performing since childhood and a Ukrainian boxer who became a heavyweight world champion.

They dated on and off for nine years, eventually becoming engaged.

Their daughter, Kaya, was born in December 2014.

At an event in May, Panettiere said there was one thing she desperately wanted her daughter to understand.

Police and emergency medical personnel were called to a residence around 1:50 p.m. after receiving a report about an unresponsive woman.

The woman was later identified as Panettiere.

At the time Klitschko released his statement, her official cause of death had not been confirmed.

Dispatch audio from around the time of the emergency included references to an overdose and cardiac arrest, but authorities had not announced a final determination.

Klitschko did not speculate about how Panettiere died.

Instead, his message focused on grief.

He extended condolences to her parents, friends and fans and wrote that young, talented people like Panettiere should not leave the world so early.

He also asked the public to respect the family’s privacy and said he did not intend to speak further about her death for the time being.

Kaya Is Now at the Center of What Comes Next

Panettiere’s death changes the meaning of a family arrangement that had already carried enormous emotional weight.

For years, Kaya primarily lived with her father while Panettiere tried to recover and rebuild.

Panettiere had spoken about the pain of that distance.

She also worried about how her daughter would someday interpret the most difficult parts of her life.

Would Kaya understand why certain decisions had been made?

Would she believe any of those struggles were somehow connected to her?

Panettiere wanted to make sure the answer was no.

Now Klitschko has made his own pledge.
