1 Dead, 2 Missing After Pontoon Boat Capsizes Near Alcatraz Island

One dog died, 13 victims were safely rescued and three victims were transported to local hospitals

One person has died, and two other people are missing after a boat capsized between the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay on Tuesday, July 14.

Around 3:35 p.m. local time, a three-deck, 50-foot cabin cruiser began to sink about 600 yards off Alcatraz, San Francisco Fire Lieutenant Mariano Elias confirms to PEOPLE. Although the initial reports described a fire, Elias states that there was no fire. Instead, it was the engine’s steam hitting the water. The fire lieutenant confirms the boat was registered to Stockton, Calif.

The boat was carrying 19 adults and one dog, per ABC 7. The boat is believed to be a recreational vessel that departed “somewhere near the St. Francis Yacht Club,” San Francisco Fire Chief Dean Crispen said during a press conference published by local CBS affiliate KPIX.

“Several people were scattered all over the water,” Elias tells PEOPLE. “Some people were on the deck, but only one was visible when the police department arrived on scene.”

Crispen said in the news briefing that the department issued a full marine response with assistance from the San Francisco Police Department, Oakland Police Department and U.S. Coast Guard, per KPIX.

The first responders found one victim who was “severely injured” and was later transported to the nearby hospital, where they were declared deceased. Three other victims were transported to local hospitals, with injuries being reported from the impact of falling into the water, Crispen said. Thirteen people were safely rescued and two remain missing. The dog did not survive.

No identities have been publicly disclosed.

The search for the missing victims is still active as of Tuesday evening. “We are going to continue for hours to make sure that we find these two missing people, if possible,” Crispen told reporters, noting that windy conditions could impact efforts, but the SFFD will continue to search.

“Our standard operating procedure is to continue to search as long as it’s safe enough for us to search,” he said.

Divers, 11 boats and helicopters are searching for the missing victims, per Crispen.

Elias tells PEOPLE that the boat sank at a depth of 120 feet below the waterline, and confirms that the SFFD and the U.S. Coast Guard will continue the search until morning.

PEOPLE reached out to the San Francisco Police Department for comment.
