Sgt. Angel Rampersad: The 28-Year-Old Soldier Remembered as a Hometown Hero

Sgt. Angel “Sarah” Rampersad was only 28 when her life was suddenly cut short while serving overseas.
The U.S. Army soldier from Ozone Park, Queens, was killed on July 17, 2026, during an attack at Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan. Rampersad was assigned to the Germany-based 1st Battalion, 57th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, 52nd Air Defense Artillery Brigade.
But to the people who knew her, Angel was far more than a soldier.

Friends and family remembered her as warm, fearless and deeply devoted to the people around her. She was known for her bright smile, adventurous spirit and willingness to stand up for people who needed someone in their corner. She had graduated from John Jay College of Criminal Justice and had dreamed of serving in the military from a young age.
Her death devastated the Queens community.
On July 31, hundreds — with NBC New York reporting thousands across the wider community — gathered in Ozone Park for her funeral. Uniformed officers carried her flag-draped coffin through the streets as mourners stood along the procession route to pay their final respects.
Her mother, Carol Acevedo, described her daughter as a real hero and urged others to cherish their loved ones while they still can.
Angel was later laid to rest at Long Island National Cemetery with full military honors.
Her story has resonated far beyond the neighborhood where she grew up. She was also remembered in Trinidad and Tobago because of her family heritage, with the country’s government expressing condolences to her family and honoring her courage, commitment and selflessness.

For Queens, Angel Rampersad is remembered not simply as a fallen soldier, but as a daughter, friend, neighbor and young woman whose life ended far too soon.
Her community will remember her smile. Her family will remember her love.
And her name will not be forgotten.
