The Expendables 5: Back for War

Rating: 4/5 Old Dogs, New Tricks
The Expendables franchise has always been about one thing: watching aging action stars blow stuff up and make dad jokes. The Expendables 5: Back for War delivers exactly that, with a twist—this time, they’re not just fighting for a paycheck. They’re fighting for one of their own.
The film opens with Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone) enjoying a quiet retirement, fishing and ignoring phone calls. But when Christmas (Jason Statham) shows up with bad news—Trench (Arnold Schwarzenegger) has been captured during a solo mission in Eastern Europe—Barney must assemble the team one last time. The catch? Most of the original crew are either dead or too old. So Barney recruits a new generation: a cocky young operative, a female sniper with a grudge, and a tech genius who’s never fired a gun.

The cast is a who’s who of action royalty. Stallone brings the gravitas, Statham brings the one-liners, and Schwarzenegger (in limited scenes) brings the nostalgia. The new blood holds their own, and the intergenerational dynamics add unexpected depth. The action is classic Expendables—big, loud, and gloriously stupid. A sequence involving a train heist is a highlight.
The Verdict: A fun, emotional send-off for the old guard and a promising introduction for the new. The Expendables aren’t done yet.
Final Thought: Old soldiers never die. They just reload.
