After nearly three decades of marriage, Mark Consuelos has apparently discovered one circumstance that could keep him from ever leaving Kelly Ripa — even if the romance disappeared completely.

The reason is not money, television or even the three children they share.

It is Lena, their dog.

During an Aug. 11 episode of Live with Kelly and Mark, Consuelos jokingly told his wife that his attachment to their beloved pet is so strong that he would remain in a marriage without love if that were the only way to see Lena every day.

Ripa’s response was immediate and perfectly suited to the couple’s teasing television chemistry.

If all Consuelos required was a loveless marriage, she joked, that could easily be arranged.

Behind the punch line was a surprisingly relatable conversation about something many couples face when relationships end: who gets the pets?

A Conversation About Divorce Quickly Became About Lena

The exchange began while Ripa and Consuelos were discussing proposed legislation in Pennsylvania concerning pets when couples divorce.

The bill would introduce rules addressing matters such as shared schedules, custody arrangements and how costs associated with an animal might be divided between former partners. Ripa described the idea as treating disputes over pets in ways that more closely resemble child-custody arrangements.

That hypothetical scenario quickly became personal.

Consuelos imagined what would happen if he and Ripa ever divorced and Lena stayed with his wife.

He admitted that he would lie awake wondering what the little dog was doing.

Ripa immediately pushed the joke further, suggesting that her husband would probably be troubled by the idea of another man petting Lena.

The thought apparently did not sit well with Consuelos.

As a photograph of the Maltese-Shih Tzu mix appeared for the studio audience, both hosts began gushing over her.

Consuelos affectionately declared, “That’s my Lena,” while Ripa praised the dog’s adorable face.

Then Consuelos made his position clear.

He joked that he would rather stay in a loveless marriage than lose daily access to Lena.

For a couple who have spent years openly joking about marriage, family life and each other on television, it was a typically playful exchange. But anyone deeply attached to a family pet could probably understand the emotion underneath it.

Lena Was Supposed to Appear on Television — Then She Became Family

Lena did not enter Ripa and Consuelos’ lives through a traditional search for a new pet.

She first appeared on Live.

In 2021, Lena was featured during a “Happy Pets” segment on the daytime show. Ripa and Consuelos became attached to her during the broadcast and ultimately decided to adopt her in March of that year.

What began as an on-air encounter quickly turned into a permanent addition to their household.

Five years later, it is clear that Lena occupies an unusually important place in Consuelos’ heart.

His comments about hypothetical divorce may have been intentionally exaggerated for laughs, but his attachment to the dog was not difficult to see.

Even imagining losing everyday contact with her was enough for him to joke that remaining unhappily married would be preferable.

The Couple Already Raised Three Children Together

Of course, Ripa and Consuelos’ family story began long before Lena arrived.

The pair share three adult children: Michael, 29, Lola, 25, and Joaquin, 23.

Their family has grown up while their parents have remained one of entertainment’s most enduring couples.

Ripa and Consuelos first became known together through All My Children, and their personal relationship eventually became as familiar to audiences as their individual careers.

Ripa Recently Returned After Gum Surgery

The discussion came as new episodes featuring Ripa returned to daytime television following an absence connected to gum graft surgery.

The episodes airing beginning Aug. 10 had been taped before the show’s annual summer hiatus and included newly packaged material from conversations recorded earlier in the season. Her first newly taped appearance following the procedure is expected when Live with Kelly and Mark resumes its live format on Sept. 8.

But during the Lena conversation, Ripa and Consuelos slipped easily into the kind of back-and-forth viewers have come to expect from them.

He proposed staying in a loveless marriage for the dog.

She instantly agreed to his terms.

And Lena, unknowingly, became the clear winner of a divorce that does not exist.
