Erling Haaland’s Face Found on Cocaine Packages in Bizarre Ecuador Drug Bust

QUITO, Ecuador — Ecuadorian authorities have seized a massive cocaine shipment bearing the image of Norwegian soccer star Erling Haaland, creating a bizarre connection between one of football’s biggest names and an international drug-trafficking investigation.

Police discovered the shipment hidden inside a truck near Ecuador’s border with Colombia after receiving an anonymous tip. Officers found hundreds of packages concealed in a false compartment, with many carrying stickers featuring Haaland’s face.

Authorities said the shipment contained approximately 469 kilograms, or 1,034 pounds, of cocaine divided among 370 packages.

Driver Arrested

The truck was intercepted on the Pan-American Highway near the northern city of Tulcán.

Police arrested a woman identified as María R., who was reportedly carrying Colombian identification documents. Investigators have not publicly explained where the shipment originated or where it was ultimately headed.

The cocaine was estimated to have a street value of approximately $842,000 in Ecuador, more than $11 million in the United States and nearly $20 million in Europe, illustrating the enormous value differences across international drug markets.

Why Haaland’s Image?

Perhaps the strangest element of the seizure was the packaging.

The green-wrapped packages displayed images of Haaland, one of the world’s most recognizable soccer players. Ecuadorian authorities did not say why traffickers selected his likeness.

Experts and law-enforcement officials have previously noted that criminal organizations sometimes place names, logos or images of celebrities and athletes on drug packages as a form of branding. Such markings can reportedly help identify a particular trafficking organization, shipment or intended recipient.

Haaland has no reported connection to the cocaine shipment, and there is no indication that he authorized the use of his image.

The Norwegian striker’s likeness is not the first famous soccer image to appear on seized narcotics. Police have previously found packages bearing images of other prominent footballers, including Lionel Messi.

Ecuador Remains a Major Drug-Trafficking Route

The seizure highlights Ecuador’s role as a major logistical hub in the international cocaine trade.

Authorities say much of the cocaine moving through Ecuador originates in neighboring Colombia and Peru before being transported toward markets in North America and Europe.

Ecuadorian police reported seizing approximately 80 tons of drugs during the first half of 2026. In 2025, authorities seized nearly 215 tons, while the total in 2024 approached 295 tons.

An Unlikely Soccer Connection

For Haaland, the incident appears to be nothing more than an unusual and unauthorized use of his image.

The Manchester City striker has become one of the most recognizable players in world football, particularly after his strong performance at the 2026 World Cup. His growing global fame may explain why traffickers chose his likeness for their packaging.

For Ecuadorian investigators, however, the celebrity image is secondary to the much larger issue: hundreds of kilograms of cocaine were allegedly being transported through the country.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to identify the organization behind the shipment and determine its intended destination.
