Alden Ehrenreich Set to Join Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler in ‘Miami Vice ’85’

Alden Ehrenreich has reportedly landed his next major film role, joining Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler in Universal Pictures’ upcoming “Miami Vice ’85,” an original take on the classic 1980s television drama.Alden Ehrenreich introduced as new Han Solo at 'Star Wars' Celebration

The project will be directed by Joseph Kosinski, with a screenplay by Dan Gilroy. Production is expected to begin later this year, with the film scheduled for an IMAX release on May 19, 2028.

“Miami Vice ’85” will explore the glamour and corruption of mid-1980s Miami, offering a new interpretation of the influential television series. The film is inspired by the pilot episode of the original Miami Vice, the Universal Television series that became a major cultural influence and helped shape fashion, music and visual style during the era.

According to the information provided, the new film will bring modern filmmaking technology to the sights and sounds associated with the original series and will be filmed specifically for IMAX.

The project is being produced by Dylan Clark of Dylan Clark Productions and Kosinski. Gilroy’s screenplay is based on characters created by Anthony Yerkovich, who executive produced the original series alongside Michael Mann. Eric Warren Singer previously wrote an earlier version of the screenplay.

At Universal Pictures, Executive Vice President of Production Development Sara Scott and Creative Executive of Production Development Christina Hoffrogge will oversee the project for the studio.Từ trái sang phải: Alden Ehrenreich, Michael B. Jordan và Austin Butler

For Ehrenreich, the role comes at an important point in his career. Earlier this summer, he won his first Tony Award for his performance in Becky Shaw, earning strong critical recognition for his work.

Sources say Ehrenreich had more than eight offers but ultimately chose Miami Vice ’85, with the opportunity to work alongside Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler under Kosinski’s direction proving especially appealing.

Ehrenreich also has several other projects ahead. He will appear opposite Helen Mirren in Anton Corbijn’s A Talent for Murder, which is scheduled to have its world premiere at the 2026 Toronto Film Festival. He is also set to star opposite Daisy Ridley in The Last Resort, which is scheduled for a theatrical release in 2027.

His recent film credits include Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer and Zach Cregger’s Weapons.

With Jordan, Butler and now Ehrenreich attached, Miami Vice ’85 is shaping up as one of Universal’s notable upcoming projects, bringing together a high-profile cast and Kosinski’s modern filmmaking approach for a new interpretation of one of television’s most recognizable 1980s titles.
