He gave his life jacket to save a stranger — and never made it back

When the floodwaters of Kerala turned into a raging current, R. Rajesh did what he had done many times before: he went into the water to help someone in danger.
But this rescue would become his final one.
Rajesh, a 36-year-old swimming and rappelling instructor from Thiruvananthapuram, joined local volunteers responding to severe flooding in Kerala’s Kannur district. On August 2, he was trying to rescue 61-year-old farmer Benny, who had become stranded on an island of land surrounded by the swollen Kariangode River.

He reached the man — then made an extraordinary choice
Rajesh managed to reach Benny and began bringing him toward safety.
But the current was extremely powerful.
During the rescue, Rajesh gave his own life jacket to Benny, ensuring that the older man had something to keep him afloat.
Benny survived.
Rajesh was swept away by the current.
A three-day search followed. His body was eventually recovered on August 4.
He had rescued people before
Rajesh wasn’t a stranger to dangerous rescue operations.
He had previously taken part in rescue efforts during the devastating 2018 Kerala floods and the 2024 landslide, according to reports. His experience as a swimming and rescue instructor repeatedly put him in situations where other people’s lives depended on his ability to enter dangerous waters.
This time, however, he did not come home.
Kerala honored him as a hero
The Kerala government later granted state honors to Rajesh in recognition of his courage and sacrifice. Officials also announced that the government would help complete his unfinished home.

His death has deeply affected the local community and the many people who knew him through his rescue work.
But perhaps the most powerful part of his story is also the simplest:
A man was trapped in a deadly flood. Rajesh went in.
He got the stranger out.
Then he gave him the one thing that might have saved his own life.
And the stranger survived.
Rajesh did not.
His final rescue was not about recognition, money or fame.
It was simply about seeing another human being in danger — and choosing to help.
Some heroes are remembered because of what they achieved.
Rajesh is remembered because of what he was willing to give up for someone he barely knew.
