Taekwondo World Medalist Isabelle Sava Dies Unexpectedly in Her Sleep at 19

LONDON, England — The international taekwondo community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Isabelle Sava, a 19-year-old world championship medalist and aspiring lawyer who died unexpectedly in her sleep after suffering a cardiac arrest.

Sava passed away on August 17, despite desperate efforts by ambulance and air ambulance crews to revive her. Her family described her death as completely unexpected, and no underlying medical condition has been publicly disclosed.

A Rising Star in Sport and Academics

Born to Romanian parents Laura and Ovi Sava, Isabelle had spent more than a decade training in taekwondo and earned a second-degree black belt before becoming one of Britain’s brightest young competitors.

Her biggest international achievement came in 2022, when she won a silver medal in sparring at the ITF Taekwondo World Championships in the Netherlands, proudly representing Great Britain on the world stage.

Away from competition, Isabelle was preparing to begin her second year studying Law at Queen Mary University of London, where she dreamed of becoming a commercial lawyer.

More Than a Champion

Friends say Isabelle’s accomplishments only told part of her story.

She was actively involved in the university’s Law Society, Commercial Awareness Society, and Student Advancement Society, while also volunteering as a student writer for the Queen Mary Legal Advice Centre.

Before university, she served as a Police Cadet and completed both the Bronze and Silver levels of the prestigious Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, reflecting her commitment to leadership and community service.

A family friend who organized a fundraiser described Isabelle as “kind, intelligent, disciplined, compassionate and incredibly hardworking,” adding that she was ambitious without ever losing her humility.

Parents Face an Unimaginable Loss

Isabelle was the only child of Laura and Ovi Sava, and those close to the family say she was not only their daughter but also their best friend.

A fundraising campaign has been launched to help her parents with funeral expenses and allow them to focus on grieving without the burden of unexpected financial costs.
