Nashville International Airport Set to Be Renamed in Honor of Dolly Parton

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Nashville International Airport is set to receive a new name honoring one of Tennessee’s most beloved cultural icons: country music legend Dolly Parton.

Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee and officials with the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority announced plans to rename the airport in Parton’s honor following her death at age 80.

A Tribute to a Tennessee Icon

Parton was born and raised in Tennessee and built a career that made her one of the most recognizable figures in country music.

Supporters of the proposal say naming Nashville’s airport after her would provide a permanent tribute to her contributions to music, entertainment, philanthropy and the state itself.

The proposed name is expected to be Dolly Parton International Airport.

A Petition Helped Drive the Idea

The push to rename the airport gained significant momentum after Parton’s death.

A petition calling for Nashville International Airport to be renamed in her honor collected more than 150,000 signatures, reflecting the widespread support for the idea.

The campaign had actually begun before her death, but public interest surged afterward.

The Name Change Still Needs Approval

Although officials have announced their intention to honor Parton, the airport’s name change is not yet simply a done deal.

The Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority is expected to consider the proposal at a meeting on September 17.

Current airport naming policies reportedly create an obstacle because they generally prevent facilities from being named after people who have been deceased for less than two years. Officials are expected to discuss changing that policy as part of the process.

Why Nashville?

Parton’s connection to Nashville runs deep.

She moved to the city after graduating high school and began building the career that would eventually make her a global superstar.

Songs such as “Jolene,” “9 to 5” and “Coat of Many Colors” helped establish her as a songwriting and recording powerhouse, while her business ventures and charitable work expanded her influence far beyond music.

She also became closely associated with Tennessee through Dollywood and numerous philanthropic initiatives, including the Imagination Library.

A Lasting Legacy

Parton’s death has prompted tributes across Tennessee and around the world.

Renaming Nashville’s major airport would give the state one of its most visible opportunities to celebrate her legacy.

If approved, travelers arriving in Nashville could eventually find themselves landing at an airport bearing the name of the woman whose music, generosity and unmistakable personality helped make Tennessee synonymous with country music.

For a city known as Music City, the proposed tribute would be an especially fitting way to remember one of its most famous daughters.
