Mom Thought Her Back Pain Came From an Old Mattress — It Was Actually Stage 4 Cancer

DUNDEE, Scotland — For months, Kimberley Anderson blamed the nagging pain in her back and shoulders on an aging mattress.

The 39-year-old mother believed a better night’s sleep would solve the problem. Instead, doctors delivered devastating news: her breast cancer had returned and spread throughout her body as stage 4 metastatic cancer.

Today, Kimberley is sharing her story to encourage others never to ignore persistent changes in their bodies.

A Pain That Wouldn’t Go Away

Kimberley had previously battled stage 3 breast cancer and was declared cancer-free in early 2021 after surgery, chemotherapy and radiation.

Two years later, she began experiencing constant pain across her back and shoulders. Assuming the discomfort came from sleeping on an old mattress, she replaced it and tried to carry on with daily life.

But the pain continued getting worse.

Eventually, additional scans revealed the heartbreaking truth: the cancer had returned and spread beyond her breast.

Cancer Had Spread Throughout Her Body

Doctors diagnosed Kimberley with metastatic breast cancer, meaning the disease had spread to multiple organs and bones.

According to her family, the cancer was found in her:

• Neck
• Chest wall
• Ovaries
• Adrenal gland
• Ribs
• Brain

The diagnosis completely changed her life and meant the disease was no longer considered curable, although treatments could help control it.

Refusing to Give Up

Despite the devastating prognosis, Kimberley chose to fight.

She underwent additional chemotherapy, radiotherapy and brain surgery after tumors were discovered in 2024. Her latest scans show the cancer is currently stable, allowing her to continue spending precious time with her family.

She says she refuses to let statistics define her future.

“I’m living with cancer, not dying from it,” Kimberley has said while documenting her journey online.

The Symptom She Wants Everyone to Know

Kimberley hopes her experience raises awareness that breast cancer doesn’t always begin with a lump.

Persistent back, shoulder or bone pain can sometimes signal that cancer has spread, particularly in people with a previous history of the disease. As a mother, Kimberley says her greatest motivation is creating more memories with her children.

What she once dismissed as nothing more than a worn-out mattress became the warning sign that saved her life—and she hopes others won’t make the same assumption.
