THE MASK 3

Rating: 3/5 Green Screens
It’s been nearly 30 years since Jim Carrey turned his face into a cartoon and stole our hearts. The Mask 3: Maskquerade brings the green menace back, but with a twist: this time, the mask finds a new victim.
Stanley Ipkiss (Jim Carrey) is now a grumpy old man living in a retirement home, convinced his wild days are behind him. When the Mask resurfaces and attaches itself to his teenage grandson (a young comedian trying his best), Stanley must come out of retirement to teach the kid how to control the chaos. Chaos, of course, ensues.

Carrey is the reason to watch. Even at his age, he can still twist his face into those glorious, rubbery expressions. The scene where he and his grandson have a “Mask-off” dance battle is pure joy. However, the CGI feels cheap, and the plot (involving a generic villain who wants the mask for “power”) is a rehash of the first two films. The jokes land about 60% of the time, which is enough for a fun rental.
The Verdict: Nostalgic, funny, and utterly unnecessary. But seeing Carrey back in green paint is worth the price of admission.
Final Thought: Sssssmokin! (But only sometimes.)
