Sally Field Breaks Down at the Emmys: “I Never Stopped Loving Dolly Parton”

LOS ANGELES — One of the most emotional moments of the 2026 Emmy Awards came when Oscar winner Sally Field stepped onto the stage to honor her late friend and Steel Magnolias co-star Dolly Parton, delivering a tribute that left the audience in tears.

Field, 79, reflected on the friendship the two women built while filming the beloved 1989 classic, saying that although life eventually took them to different places, her love for Dolly never faded.

“If There Are Truly Angels on Earth…”

Introducing the tribute, Field called Parton far more than a music legend.

“If there are truly angels on Earth, then we just lost one,” she told the audience.

She remembered Dolly as genuine, humble, supportive and blisteringly funny, praising the warmth and generosity that made everyone around her feel special.

Field added that when they first worked together on Steel Magnolias, she admired Dolly immediately—but only later did she fully realize the extraordinary humanitarian she had become.

“She was a friend. I admired her. I loved working with her. I never stopped loving her.”

She explained that filming a movie creates a unique connection between actors.

“It’s like being in battle together,” Field said, noting that even though she and Dolly lived far apart and rarely saw each other over the years, the affection between them never disappeared.

Reba McEntire’s Musical Farewell

After Field’s speech, the tribute continued with Reba McEntire, who performed Dolly’s heartfelt ballad “Appalachian Memories.”

As McEntire sang, archival footage and photographs celebrated Parton’s remarkable career—from her early television appearances to her decades as one of America’s most beloved entertainers. The performance became one of the night’s defining moments, earning a standing ovation from the audience.

A Friendship Born on Steel Magnolias
