Mama Cat Arrives at Shelter With One Tiny Kitten — and Ends Up Caring for Seven

When Mama Mittens arrived at the Helen Woodward Animal Center in California, she appeared to have enough on her paws already.

The polydactyl cat — born with extra toes — had been brought to the shelter with her 3-week-old daughter, Socks. The pair settled in as staff cared for them, but their little family was about to grow dramatically.

Six orphaned kittens soon arrived at the shelter, desperately in need of a mother.

From One Kitten to Seven

The six kittens were only about a week old and needed the kind of constant warmth, feeding and attention that a mother cat could provide.

Shelter staff introduced them to Mama Mittens, hoping she might accept the unfamiliar babies. She did far more than tolerate them.

Mama Mittens welcomed all six kittens, nursing, grooming and cuddling them alongside her own daughter. Almost overnight, she went from being a mother of one to caring for seven kittens. 

The six orphaned kittens — Flip, Flop, Jean, Jacket, Hat and Scarf — quickly began thriving under her care. Shelter staff said Mama Mittens provided not only nourishment but also the affection the kittens had been missing.

A Mother to a Whole New Litter

For the shelter team, Mama Mittens’ response was a remarkable example of how animals can care for one another.

She had entered the shelter needing a safe place to raise her own kitten. Instead, she became a foster mother to six more babies who had arrived without one.

Her distinctive extra toes made Mama Mittens memorable from the beginning, but it was her willingness to take on an entire second litter that made her story especially touching.

The kittens were expected to become ready for adoption once they were old enough and healthy enough to leave her care. Mama Mittens, meanwhile, would eventually need a home of her own.

A New Life for Mama Mittens

Mama Mittens’ story ultimately became a reminder that rescue animals can sometimes become rescuers themselves.

She arrived with one tiny kitten clinging to her side. Within days, six orphaned babies had joined them, and she treated the newcomers as if they had always belonged.

What began as a mother cat seeking shelter became an unexpected second chance for seven kittens — all thanks to one unusually generous mama with a few extra toes and plenty of love to give.
