Dolly Parton’s First Posthumous Song Brings Her Voice Back to Bluegrass

Dolly Parton’s voice is being heard once again, just weeks after the legendary country music star’s passing.

Her first posthumously released song, “Bound To Ride,” arrived on September 9, giving fans a final opportunity to hear Parton in a spirited bluegrass performance recorded several years ago.

A Song Recorded Years Before Her Passing

Parton recorded “Bound To Ride” in 2022 for a tribute project celebrating the legendary bluegrass duo Carter and Ralph Stanley.

The traditional song was made during a surge in COVID-19 cases, so Parton recorded her vocals from her private studio rather than traveling to work alongside the other musicians.

The recording became part of Where The Soul Never Dies: Celebrating 80 Years Of The Stanley Brothers, an upcoming album scheduled for release on October 16.

The track features members of the First Ladies of Bluegrass, including Alison Brown on banjo, Becky Buller on fiddle, Sierra Hull on mandolin, Missy Raines on bass and Molly Tuttle on guitar.

Although the musicians recorded their parts separately, the finished song captures the lively energy of a group performance.

Producer Garry West said Parton delivered exactly the kind of performance they had hoped for, describing it as “the full Dolly.” Her vocals include playful encouragement and introductions for the musicians as they take their solos.

A Return to Parton’s Bluegrass Roots

Bluegrass was an important part of Parton’s musical identity throughout her career.

She released several acclaimed bluegrass albums, including The Grass Is Blue, Little Sparrow and Halos & Horns, while continuing to celebrate the traditional Appalachian sounds that influenced her music from an early age.

“Bound To Ride” carries that connection forward while also honoring the Stanley Brothers, whose work helped shape modern bluegrass.

A Voice That Continues

Parton died at age 80 on August 25 following a brief battle with cancer. Her passing prompted tributes from artists across generations, including Miley Cyrus, Elton John, Paul McCartney, Taylor Swift and Beyoncé.

Now, with “Bound To Ride,” one of Parton’s previously recorded performances has become part of her musical legacy.

For longtime fans, the release is more than a new song. It is another reminder that Parton’s voice, humor and unmistakable musical spirit will continue to live through the recordings she left behind.
