A 14-year-old boy was shot in the back and killed in a possible botched scooter robbery in Queens Monday afternoon, police and sources said.

Malakai Adams, of Averne, was shot at about 3:40 p.m. behind Ocean Bay Apartments on Beach Channel Drive in Edgemere – an area residents say is a notoriously dangerous neighborhood, according to cops.

He was rushed by EMS to Cohen Children’s Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead, according to authorities.

Local Rhea Lowe said violence happens in the neighborhood “almost everyday,” but that Monday’s shooting particularly worries her.

“It’s directly across the street from a school, there’s too many young people around. That’s dangerous,” Lowe said.

Another area resident said she doesn’t feel safe in the neighborhood – and didn’t bat an eye over the violent crime.

“We’re not even surprised to hear about this, to be honest,” she said.

“I just keep praying,” said another middle-aged woman in the nabe.

“I’m a Christian because I wouldn’t be able to make it without God. Because it’s really getting bad out here.”

The trigger-happy attacker was last seen heading east on a two-wheeler on Beach 51st Street, wearing a black sweater and white shorts, cops said.

Law enforcement sources said the suspect may have opened fire while stealing a scooter.

There were no arrests by Monday night.

The 101st precinct, which includes Edgemere, has had five shootings and six shooting victims so far in 2026, according to the latest NYD data. There have also been 80 reported robberies this year, the data shows.

Two other teens, as well as three adults, were also shot in a burst of Big Apple gun violence last Sunday, Sept. 13.

The youngest victim was a 17-year-old boy who took a bullet to the chest around 9:15 p.m. behind a NYCHA building on Beach 40th Street near Beach Channel Drive in Far Rockaway not far from where the 14-year-old was shot and killed on Monday police said.
