A Florida man is recovering after being brutally attacked by two pit bulls during an evening jog in Miami.

On Wednesday, July 15, Evan Motlong was jogging with his dog near Northwest 2nd Avenue and 22nd Street in the Wynwood neighborhood when two unleashed pit bulls allegedly attacked them, he told NBC 6 and WPLG Local 10.

“When I saw the dogs run after my dog — all I could think about was saving her,” said Motlong, 20, to WPLG. “That’s my baby. That’s my child.”

“Just like that I see his two pit bulls on top of my dog, biting her,” he continued. “She’s screaming and yelping in pain.”

As Motlong recalled, he tried to pull the dogs away while calling the police for help. At that point, the other man involved in the incident allegedly ordered the dogs to attack him.

“This dude hit me when I was on the ground, and I was unconscious,” he told the outlet, claiming that the man shoved him to the ground before punching him. “I just want to get justice for myself and my dog.”

Appearing with a black eye as he recounted the incident, Motlong also told NBC 6 that he got his arm “badly bit” while trying to pull one of the pit bulls off his own dog.

In a video taken by a witness, Motlong can be seen lying on the ground with blood dripping from his head as the two pit bulls and their owner walked away from the scene. Before leaving, the owner of the pit bulls appears to aggressively kick Motlong’s phone on the sidewalk.

“People shouldn’t have to look over their shoulder wondering if their [dog], a family member basically, a dog is a family member, is going to get attacked or potentially killed,” Motlong emphasized to NBC 6.

He continued, “The comments I’ve read on my story have said they’ve seen this guy doing this to other people.”

Days after the attack, police identified the owner of the pit bulls as Jonte Jack, according to WPLG and WSVN. The 44-year-old was arrested and faces multiple charges of aggravated assault, battery, and resisting a police officer.

The Miami Police Department did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment on Sunday, July 19.
