AGAINST THE ODDS: HOW BABY LUCA IS FINDING HIS OWN WAY FORWARD

When Luca Holtham was born, his doctors and family could not say what his future would look like. Born with several rare and complex medical conditions, the 18-month-old has faced challenges affecting his breathing, movement and development from the very beginning.

Luca was born with a diaphragmatic defect, a spinal abnormality associated with spinal cord damage, global developmental delay, and a need for supplemental oxygen to help him breathe.

A diaphragmatic defect is an abnormal opening or weakness in the diaphragm, the muscle that separates the chest from the abdomen and plays an important role in breathing. Depending on its type and severity, it can affect the development or function of the lungs. Spinal abnormalities can also affect the spinal cord and nerves, potentially influencing movement and other functions.18 month old Luca Holtham with his mother Regan.

Luca also has global developmental delay, meaning he reaches developmental milestones later than expected in areas such as motor skills, communication, learning or social development. It is a description of developmental progress rather than a single specific disease, and the challenges can vary greatly from one child to another.

Because Luca’s medical needs are complex, his family knew he would require specialized therapy and adaptive equipment. But while waiting for National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) funding, accessing those services could have been difficult and expensive.

After being discharged from hospital, Luca was referred to Ability WA’s In-Home Baby Intervention Service, which allowed him to receive physiotherapy in the comfort of his own home.

The support has already helped him reach milestones that once seemed uncertain. At 18 months, Luca can sit up, use his hands and communicate through sign language. He has also been able to use equipment from the AssisTkids equipment hire library, including a stroller, bath chair and a buggy he can drive himself.

For his mother, Regan Holtham, seeing Luca sit up and play has been particularly meaningful.Little Luca reaching milestones through Ability WA’s In-Home Baby Intervention Service

His development remains delayed, and his future milestones cannot be predicted with certainty. But Regan hopes continued physiotherapy may eventually help him learn to walk, even if his way of walking may look different from that of other children.

The home-based therapy has also made a major difference to the entire family. With three children and no car, travelling by public transport to hospitals and appointments had been a significant challenge. Receiving therapy at home has made it much easier for Luca to access consistent support.

The AssisTkids equipment library provides another important resource, allowing children to try specialized equipment without their families having to immediately purchase it. This can be especially valuable when a child has complex needs and the most suitable equipment is not yet clear.

Luca’s journey is still unfolding, but his progress shows why early intervention, physiotherapy, communication support and appropriate equipment can be so important for children with complex developmental and medical needs.

For a little boy whose future was once filled with uncertainty, every new skill is a meaningful step forward — and today, Luca is sitting, playing, communicating and continuing to show his family what is possible. ❤️
