Thailand is mourning one of its deadliest school shootings in recent years after a 14-year-old student allegedly killed his grandparents before opening fire at a secondary school near Bangkok, leaving at least eight people dead, including the gunman.

The attack unfolded on the morning of Aug. 7 in Nonthaburi province, just northwest of the Thai capital. Authorities say the teenager first fatally shot his grandparents at their home before traveling to Debsirin Nonthaburi School, where he opened fire on teachers and staff members. The suspect later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound while being transported to a hospital.

According to Thai police, the violence began at the teenager’s home, where investigators believe he used a legally owned 9mm handgun belonging to his grandfather.

Authorities said five school employees were killed in the attack. More than 20 other people, including students and staff, were injured, with several reported in critical condition.
