Fights between both sides were snapped near the Atlanta Stadium in Georgia – with armed police intervening and detaining a number of supporters.

A small group of England fans were seen in handcuffs donning Three Lions shirts – having seemingly been involved in the brawls.

Images have also shown arrests being made and scraps breaking out from Birmingham to New York City as Argentina and England supporters lock horns.

It comes after Argentina players celebrated their victory over England by holding up a disgusting banner claiming the Falkland Islands.

Madcap fans were seen waving the deplorable sign claiming sovereignty to the islands, whose inhabitants have voted overwhelmingly to be a British Overseas Territory.

The Three Lions fought hard to win the high-stakes clash against their old rivals, but in the end it was not to be.

There will be no fairytale in New Jersey for Thomas Tuchel and England, no chance to end the 60 years of hurt.

And after losing a match they were winning with six minutes to go, quite how Tuchel will get any of his squad up enough for the pointless third-place game against France in Miami is hard to see.

When Anthony Gordon tucked home from Morgan Rogers’ cross nine minutes into the second half, England had one foot in the final.

Luck, too, it seemed was on their side as Jordan Pickford saved from Nicolas Gonzalez and the post denied Alexis Mac Allister.

But Tuchel made the same mistake we have seen from so many England managers over the years.

Dropping so deep there was no out ball.

And when you are playing Lionel Messi that always is a recipe for disaster.

So it proved, heartbreakingly so.

Twice Messi delivered from the England right. Twice the ball ended up in Pickford’s net.

Maybe a taller keeper might have kept out Enzo Fernandez’s leveller.

But Pickford had no chance when Lautaro Martinez was freed – despite all those white shirts – to head home at the start of stoppage time.

Tuchel was supposed to be the man who would supply the extra piece to complete the jigsaw.

Be better than all the men who had gone before him since Sir Alf.

Deliver the ultimate prize.

Yet when he had to make the biggest calls, to justify his salary and the fat new contract he signed before coming to the World Cup, Tuchel became just another version of all the other nearly men.
