Georgia Grandma, 44, Charged with Manslaughter as Her 2-Year-Old Grandson Dies After Drowning in Pool

A Georgia grandma has been charged after her toddler grandson drowned at a clubhouse pool last month.
Emelisa Paz-Santos was charged with involuntary manslaughter and cruelty to children in the second degree on Wednesday, July 15, according to Fulton County jail records.
The 44-year-old’s charges relate to an incident on the evening of June 21, when Roswell Police Department officers, firefighters and paramedics attended to a reported drowning at the clubhouse pool of an apartment complex, CBS News reported.
They found bystanders performing CPR on 2-year-old Axel Delgado. He was taken to a hospital but died the next day, the outlet reported.
Delgado and his family were attending a social gathering at the Harbor Landing clubhouse pool, part of the Lake House at the Martin’s Landing complex, according to FOX affiliate WAGA.
Members of the community rushed to support the toddler’s family after his death, Atlanta News First reported at the time.
“I’m feeling really, really sorry for the family,” neighbor Mary Emily Landers told the outlet. “As they navigate that, I hope they feel the support from the community, both within this community, [the] apartment community, and also outside of it. It truly is such a loss.”
After checking surveillance footage and interviewing those present, detectives found that Paz-Santos “failed to provide adequate care and supervision for Delgado, resulting in his drowning,” police told the outlet.
She surrendered to police on Tuesday, July 14, the day before she was charged, CBS News said.
Per the jail records, her surety bond was set at $35,000 on the involuntary manslaughter charge and $5,000 on the cruelty to children charge. However, she is on an Immigration and Customs Enforcement hold.
The investigation continues, and police have asked anyone who may have information to call the Roswell Police Department at 770-640-4100 or Crime Stoppers Greater Atlanta at 404-577-8477.
PEOPLE reached out to the Roswell Police Department for comment but did not immediately hear back.
