Former Vice President Kamala Harris’ new California home is drawing attention after reports highlighted the racial demographics of the exclusive Malibu neighborhood where the property is located.

The approximately 4,000-square-foot home, reportedly purchased for $8.15 million, is situated in the Point Dume community and features ocean views, multiple wine refrigerators, private putting greens and parking for several vehicles.

According to estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey, the census tract that includes Point Dume was approximately 94% White and 0.2% Black in 2019.

The figures have sparked discussion because of Harris’ long history of speaking about housing inequality, racial disparities and the importance of equal access to communities.

During a 2019 interview with The Washington Post, Harris reflected on her experience attending Howard University, a historically Black college, after growing up in communities that were largely White.

She described the experience as giving her a stronger sense of connection to a large community of people who shared similar backgrounds and experiences.

Throughout her political career, Harris has also supported policies addressing housing discrimination and racial disparities.

As California’s attorney general, she joined a Supreme Court brief involving the Fair Housing Act and policies that could have different impacts on racial groups. During her presidential campaign, she proposed financial assistance aimed at communities affected by historic housing discrimination.

As vice president, Harris also promoted efforts by the Biden administration to address potential racial bias in home appraisals.

Her new Malibu property has now become part of a broader public conversation about wealth, housing and racial diversity in exclusive communities.

Some residents and advocates have previously raised concerns about access to the Point Dume area, with critics arguing that certain barriers may make the community less accessible to people from diverse backgrounds.

At the same time, Harris’ supporters have pointed out that where a public figure chooses to live does not necessarily reflect their broader views on housing policy or racial equality.

Harris reportedly lives at the Malibu property with her husband, Doug Emhoff.

The former vice president has also recently returned to the national spotlight amid speculation about whether she could consider another presidential campaign in 2028.

A representative for Harris did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the property and the discussion surrounding the neighborhood.
